bad idea to use 0w30 in the summer, you are better off with 5w30 or 10w30

I live in Ky, so the winters are usually in the 20's and it'll drop into the teens. During the summer, its gets fairly warm 80' and 90's and will occasionally break 100.
you should be fine with 5w30 all year or you could use 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer

I use the 0W-30 German Castrol year round, including summer. The "W" in oil designations means "winter", not "weight".

Once a 0W-30, a 5W-30, or a 10W-30 achieve normal operating temperature, they are all three "30 weights," which can vary a bit, the 30wt is a general term. This german castrol's 30wt, routinely tests out in the low 12's cST at 100 degrees C. In other words, its on the high side of a 30 wt, compared to, say, Mobil 1's 5W-30, which is on the thinner side of 30 (high 9's cST). 30 wts range from 9.30 to 12.49 cST.

A significant amount of wear occurs at startup, winter or summer. That's why I like the 0W in this particular german variety of castrol. Better flow at startup, winter or summer. Thicker 30 when warmed up. Will not shear down. It will stay in grade. Many many used oil analysis confirm that this stuff is one of the very best oils out there.

If case anybody's curious, you can only get it in the USA at Autozone, some Advance Autos, only comes in 0W-30, and says "MADE IN GERMANY" on the back of the bottle. About $4.99 a quart. Elsewhere in the world its known as Castrol SLX 0w-30. It's green and smells funny, too.

I'm using Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40 Synthetic. It is also now just coming out repackaged as Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil. About $4.99 a quart. It has what's probably the best base oil available, has a fantastic antiwear additive package, and keeps your engine spotless. It is a bit hard to find, but it is worth it.(2thumbs) By the way, if you check out the oil chart in our owner's manual, the 5w-30 and 10w-30 temperature bars really only go to less than 90 degrees F.(My older 626 chart shows lots of viscosity choices for temps from sub-zero to 120+) What happens when it hits 100+ in the summer? (sun) Check with the Australian and European oil and Mazda sites; THEY spec out Xw-40 and Xw-50 oils ROUTINELY FOR THE VERY SAME ENGINES WE HAVE, FOR WHAT'S ESSENTIALLY YEAR-ROUND USE!!! U.S. car companies have to spec Xw-30 even for blistering heat to get a theoretical 0.6 to 1.6 percent mileage increase to keep the EPA happy. I can't measure 1.6 percent in the real world, can you? Screw the EPA. Use 0w-30, 0w-40 Mobil 1 for cold/moderate weather, and 5w-40 for summer heat. Keep your engine happy!
P.S. Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com. Great real world info for oil and all things maintanence, moderated by Honest-to-Gawd oil experts. You'll love it.

I think in general, it's best to use the smallest range when possible. Yeah, 0w50 sounds great (IF they have something like that), but they have to add a lot of other additives to achieve this wide of a range.
