Last week i managed to install LED-strips in the doors of our M2 and make them go on and off with the interior dome light! I don't have much pictures, but i think there is enough information to figure out how to do it yourself. If there are questions: don't hesitate to ask them!

Parts used:

  • 4x LED-strips
  • 2x Wire-spring connectors for 5 cables
  • 4 sets of JST Male/Female connectors
  • 20 meter wire (not all used)

First i had to find out which cables on the BCM belong control the interior dome light when a door is opened, when the car is unlocked or locked, or if the engine is started or stopped. I did some research and found out that both cables come from the BCM module at the passenger side of the car.

Time to test with a simple LED with a resistor that makes it suitable for a 12v connection!

This is what i got from the test:

"-" or ground
  • 0940-01C BCM
  • Wire-color: Yellow/Black
  • Color BCM plug: Grey
  • Position: Top row, 4th cable from the left

"+" or power
  • 0940-01A BCM
  • Wire-color: Blue/Red
  • Color BCM plug: Blue
  • Position: Top row, 1st cable from the left

As the car is mostly driven by my wife, she could choose the color, so pink/purple it is!

All the wires go through the original cables-guides so all the cables are properly protected and so you can't see them :) The white cable is the cable i used to power the LED-strips.

The LED-strips are attached with doublesided tape to the doors, the cable goes through a hole i drilled in the bottom of the door. Then the cable goes all the way to the passenger side of the car, where they are combined and attached to the corresponding connections on the BCM.

I have some orange strips I still need to wire in. Two for the front foot wells will be wired by switch. An another two to be wires by amp signal. So when the car bumps there is a light show lol.
My audio upgrades arrive on Thursday. So the wiring work will begin shortly.

Good luck with that! ^^

I'm a complete noob with that stuff but I'd like to install foot well LED lights which go on and off with the interior dome light. Does anyone have DETAILED instructions (with pictures) on how to do that?

You'd need to tie into the switch at the dome light. No instructions, not all that straight forward, but if u have a friend that has electrical knowledge it shouldn't be too hard.

If you want to make the LED lights go on/off with the switch on the dome light, you'll need to attach the wires to the switch in the domelight itself. If you want to make the LEDs go on/off with opening/closing the doors, starting/stopping the engine and locking/unlocking the doors, you'll need to attach the wires to the BCM like i did.

I think that attaching the LEDstrips to the BCM is way easier then attaching them to the dome light itself :)

Nicely done, thanks for sharing. I'm gonna try this out also. I work with a lot of LED application in cars and I'm always looking for cool new ways to use these easy LEDs.

Additional information

I used the following documents i found on the internet as a guide :) These are photos of the install-document that comes with the original Mazda Welcome-Lights kit (thought)

Finally had some time to make some good pictures :D

In the last photo you can also see the new LED lighting in the trunk!

Nice write up & good job, did mine by getting a door wiring connector from a scrapper & used the pins to put the new wires in the loom.....
