Disconnecting Battery

Hey guys. Do you have to disconnect the battery when you install a new exhaust? I heard from someone that the cpu will calibrate itself without disconnecting battery. Thanks in advance.

disconnecting the battery is the easiest/fastest way to recalibrate the ECU...

is there a reason you dont want to disc. the battery? takes 10 seconds...

Probably don't NEED to, but this ECU learning "Theory" has been around for 20 years....and I always do it....lol.. Just disconnect battery, get in car, step on brakes,,,I then usually leave it overnight and put it back. All done, the overnight part is optional.

The reason I'm asking is because I had a Magnaflow exhaust put on today by a so called reputable tuning shop. When I picked up the car I noticed that the clock was still set. I phoned and asked if they disconnect the battery when they do a exhaust change. They said that you don't need to since the ecu will calibrate it's self with a few minutes of running. I thought I had always read to disconnect the battery. I would think they would know what they are talking about though. All the cars they were working on were BMW's and Mercedes. They seem a upper class shop so I would think they would complete the work right.

you don't have to reset the ecu..... but esp with a factory turbo (or at least the ms3), the ecu takes its sweet time adjusting to any sort of gain.

for example If you use bad 87 gas, it'll pull timing in an instant, but you have to run good gas (93) for a couple tanks before it lets you have the power back

So that being said, will I expect to get a little more in the way of gains once I run the car a little more?

perhaps, but it'll be nice and gradual. Besides, a CBE doesn't give too much on the ms3 so there's a chance you might not notice it much except in perception (ie the louder/diff tones) and there could be some difference due to ambient temp with you might attribute to the CBE. For example, cold winter air is the best mod I ever did!
