Difference between a P5 and a regular Protege?

its got the same stock engine as any protege of the same year... and how does all that hatch lighten a car? Are you guys reading the part where HE ALREADY HAS A P5?

the p5 is a couple of hundred pounds lighter with a larger stock engine than a lot of protege's. you can also get roof racks on a p5 and not on a sedan.
Say what...?
The only Protege that weighs as much as the P5 is the MSP. And all of the 02-03 Proteges came with the same 2L engine.

For a month or two, with the dumbest girl I ever knew. But that don't make me a Texan...

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know. Yeah, I know they are not fast, I've got a couple of muscle cars and a big Jeep for toys... I just want my econo box commuter to be fun too. :)

Vehicle Weights.

According to Edmunds.com

2003 model years
-Protege DX sedan Curb Weight: 2634 lbs.
-Protege LX Sedan Curb Weight: 2634 lbs
-Protege ES Sedan Curb Weight: 2634 lbs.

-Protege5 Curb Weight: 2716 lbs.
----according to my owners manual
--------- 2749 lbs for automatic trans
--------- 2716 lbs for manual trans

-Mazdaspeed Protege Curb Weight: 2843 lbs.

The sedan and 5 both have 2.0L engines. The Mazdaspeed is turbo'd, and a little chunky I guess. Good thing they have more horses.

I wanted a P5 sooooooooo badly, but my es sedan was the same "car" with a different appearance essentially. I couldn't justify spending so much more at the time for essentially the same thing. Now though, with the used market I'm sure the price gap has narrowed. The thing you have to remember is a sedan isn't a sedan isn't a sedan. Depending on the trim they had a couple different engine choices, wheel and tires packages, and appearance packages (spoiler, fogs, side markers, etc.)

Speaking of differences between the models, what exactly are the parallels between the USDM and JDM models as far as the Familia, the Sport20, Astina, etc.?
I especially want to know because I wanted to learn about accurately badging my '02 P5.

Well, to be accurate you should leave the stock badges.

Haha, touch!

I, of course, wanted to know which badges are accurate for a "JDM conversion" on US Proteges (and other Mazdas for that matter), including mine.
I've seen the topic brought up, but never found a clear answer.

I've seen some with the Sport20 badge, which left what model the silver "Familia" badge belonged to a mystery (MP3s, perhaps?)

(I hope this isn't too off-topic from the thread)

Texans... I guess they are all really that dumb.
Negative on that Disney boy....lol...& on topic, an ES would be good compliment to the P5 for purposes the OP stated & the similar maintenance/parts/needs/knowledge would be a plus.

i tend to read my owner's manual for these facts and the owner's manual says that the p5 weighs less
