Hilarious, but that's not actually what they did.

You're thinking of corporate average fuel economy requirements, which is why companies came up with schemes to squeeze more economy out of their vehicles. That may be related but the heart of it is a bit different.

What is really going on is an oil/gas/coal industry cabal successfully gaining the power to hamstring the government from regulating their pollution. Specifically, by attempting to bury the scientific fact that greenhouse gas emissions are heating the planet and therefore alternatives to their fossil fuel products to mitigate the economic and health consequences of them are not necessary.

Think of it like Phillip Morris interfering with the government's efforts to address the harmful effect of their products. It took decades and ended in a RICO suit. Or the lead gasoline additive. Or DDT. Or CFCs.

But this fish is far bigger than those.
