Delivery Date Memo

For_Mica,
I actually talked to Metrowest about the MSP in September, on Slug's advice. What are they charging you? They wouldn't budge from $1500 over MSRP a couple months ago.

All I have to say is.....I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!

Ah, that felt good. Good luck boys....and see you in the snow!

f*%$ Mazda....i'm getting a WRX
well...after hearing about the whole cold air triggering the computer....it's the last straw....i've waited patiently....but after hearing the delay till december and now this....who knows when we'll get the car and for that matter....who knows how reliable it will be.....this is what you get when you try to develop a car this quickly without properly testing it.....i found a guy who's gonna give me a bare bones 2003 wrx for $22,000.....f*** Mazda...i'm getting a WRX

Maybe we should call "Scot Rasmussen, group manager for sports car platforms for Mazda North American Operations" personally to find out more about the delay.

I thought everyone knew that the MSP was going to have anti-tampering stuff on it. In particular, the turbo, so you can't change the hotly contested subject of boost level.

I think with all the delays that mazda has so far due to port strikes, possible part issues, possible drivability issues, etc. that it's costing them more to do the port install stuff than when doing it straight at the factory in japan. port install saves money? (hmm) (bang)

I wouldn't believe the whole "tamper proof" thing guys. There's always a way.

Sure there is way...It means good bye warranty though.

So I stopped by the dealer in Shrewsbury, MA tonight to find out what their story was. Turns out the dealership has been bought out by Sentry. The salesperson I was talking with is gone, and there's a new GM. OUCH! Back to the drawing board with my relations.
Anyway, I have to call the GM back on Friday for more info.

That sucks. Actually, I heard the old GM yelling at my sales guy when he tried to get it down to MSRP for me. Maybe you'll have better luck with the new guys...

Invisible hand and all that...

My boss would be livid if I sold one at MSRP.
Supply and demand and all that stuff.
If we're only going to get 3 of this model, it would be silly to treat them like a mass produced model.
That's what Mazda Corporate wants us to do. They sent out a memo against price gouging.
Just to cover the added expense of being a MazdaSpeed dealer which includes display materials, tech, sales, parts training, travel and stocking lots of MS parts, they need to make a chunk of change.
I heard on these forums that Cars Direct is listing them at $2,500 over MSRP and that seems reasonable to me.
I'm ready to torn apart now...

I'm not going to tear you apart but that reasoning seems a little rediculous. Granted it's a limited production car, but just by selling it at MSRP you are already going to be making $1-2K more than you would for a mass produced model (unless you get some schmuck who pays MSRP for an LX Protege). Plus, you get the hold back, an extra $3-4 hundred because you know you're going to sell the cars the instant they show up on the lot. Nothing personal, but jacking the price over MSRP is crap and I personally feel that it is bad business. I don't see any way that if a dealer charged someone over MSRP and that person has done their homework, that they would ever recommend that dealer to a friend/relative etc.

wrex,
my fleet salesrep has "guaranteed" that I'll get the msp at msrp. Is he just blowing smoke up my a**? He did say that the salesguys on the floor are doing what you are: $2,500 over msrp and they were impressed that he locked me in at my price. thoughts, anyone?

A local dealer had a blue MP3 sitting on their lot for 6 months because they wouldn't budge from their $20k+ price (I think it was $22,995.) They ended up selling it for list anyway.

Ha HA HA...

I think it's so funny how people think car salesman make so much off everycar deal.
On a regular protege, invoice is $14,235, MSRP is $15,490.
That means IF it was sold at MSRP, the dealership would gross $1,255.
Most salesman get 25% of that. $314! before taxes.
Most salesman never see any of the Dealer Holdback which is only $262 on this car.
The MSP won't have an additional 1 or 2 thousand dollars of profit built in.
That's a myth.
The guy or gal who sells you this car will have had to go through hours of classes and tests to be certified and probably had to get up way early one day to catch a plane only to come back late at night having missed a whole day of "other" sales.
Why do so many people think that car salesman aren't entitled to a profit?
Isn't that weird?

I didn't mean you personally would make an extra $1-2, but between you and the dealership. And do you agree that relative to the other cars that go off the lot, the dealership and thus you will be making more money on the MSP just by selling it MSRP?

NO, not yet

They haven't sent us the invoices as far as I know but I have no reason to expect them to raise the profit any higher on the MSP than their other cars in this price point.
We'll see when it gets here.

too much

I think dealers and people lose sight of why these cars are special. I just had this problem on a Dodge Neon SRT-4. The MSP and the SRT-4 are special because they do what they do for arond 20k. Put it up around 23k and you have to seriously consider the RSX Type-S and the Subaru WRX (for just a little more) on a dollar per dollar basis. Then the Protege and Neon's econobox roots come into play. It's only supply and demand if you pay for it at this price (which inevitably people will).
