Anyone have a video with all 3 gone?
Just had the muffler and 2nd resonator removed. It sounds great but still too quiet in my opinion. I think I might go back and have the last resonator removed as well. Anyone have a video with all 3 gone?
The very first mod I did on my 07 MS3 was a CPE CAI, custom mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust with both resonators deleted and muffler deleted. I kept just the muffler tip. I dyno'd 260WHP & 265WTQ at stock PSI.
Obviously the resonator delete and muffler delete helped with exhaust flow.
I kept my old resonator, and even though its completely straight through, the baffles and chambers must have an affect on flow somehow. My guess is that all the componenets of the MS3's exhaust change flow some way or another, otherwise we wouldnt see an improvement in throttle response from these changes.
So you still have one resonator on? It should not be too much of a difference in air flow. It will just help to muffle the sound on your exhaust.
I have seen a couple videos on youtube where MS3 owners have just deleted one of both the resonators as well as the muffler and gotten a nice sound to the car actually. IIRC srt4's only have cats and one resonator each so it doesnt seem like a bad idea... Albeit cheap lol
Criticism? Suggestions? Just seems ludicrous to spend $500 just for some sound and little gains.
I wanted to do this mod and debated for a long time. I ended up getting and installed my downpipe and midpipe first. Man, it makes quite a bit of difference in the way the car sounds. Warming up, idle is pretty loud... attention drawing loud. Once it warms up, idle is only noticeable outside the car. While driving, it's significantly louder outside. Inside there is always a bassy sound from the engine. I'm not going to say you can cruise quietly, because I can't anymore. If I'm moving, I hear my motor, and engine drone when off the gas is kind of annoying, but can be avoided by giving it a touch of gas.
The performance boost is fantastic (once the ecu relearns whats going on). Sorry guys, but I can't see how removing resonators can give you a big noticeable increase in power. Remember Mazda said 30 horsepower from their CAI and CBE, but they also said the CAI gave about 25 on its own.
I like what I've done, but wanted to be honesty about how much volume it adds, it seems like some people have said "it's only a little bit louder" but I don't think it's THAT tiny an increase.
Unfortunately, (being a musician) I love the sounds my car makes almost as much as I enjoy driving it. The dp/rp don't give it the "sti burble" that I know a lot of us are aiming at. Does anyone know if removing the rear resonator/muffler could make that happen? I like my volume where it is, I'm just looking for burble.
Who said I was picky?? (butt)
Well, to make it clear, removing the resonators does not mean HP increase. However, it helps more in exhaust flow and it is mostly to take the muffle noise away from your exhaust. I have a TBE exhaust setup, without the resonators and muffler, just muffler tip and the car sounds mean as F****. It has a nice grumple to it and yes you can almost compare it to an sti sound. The mazda has a very distinctive sound compared to the sti & srt4 when having a free flow exhaust. I enjoy the sound of my little beast. All I can say is V8's don't sound to intimidating anymore, the 4 cyl mazda sounds just has mean and nice also.
I will try to post up some video/sound clips of my car in WOT, idle, & revs. That would be after I put in my new turbo. E.T.A- 2 weeks.
Did you do it step by step (downpipe then exhaust, or all at once)? If so, how much volume gain from downpipe to full exhaust?
Btw, looking into a FMIC too, yours looks hot, which one is it?
OK just went and got an estimate at a muffler shop for deleting the two resonators and replace with straight pipe and they told me $100, Is that to steap?? Some of you stated that it was like $50 or $60. Was that for just one or two deleted? Also I am running SU testpipe and stock downpipe so it should sound pretty sick!
