Hey Don, I'm glad there's somebody out there that notices this type of thing. People do "hate" for such dumb reasons.
I don't know if this thread is dead or not but I have an anecdote to add. I had an 83 Scirocco that I was the third owner of. I had the original records. The original owner got the oil changed at the dealer at the recomended 7500 mile intervals up to the first 150,000 miles or so. When I got it, the car was at 230,000 miles and started up first time every time. Ran smooth as s***. Personally, I run Amsoil and change it every 5000 mi. I deliver pizzas so I run it pretty hard. It may be too frequent, but it can't hurt.

You didn't read the whole manual neither there buddy...
It says 7500 or if you drive in certain conditions, then 5000 miles. Just about everyone on this board falls into the 5000 mile category.
I change mine every 5000, just like the manual says.

I've been using Mobil1 in my engines since 1979. I keep my cars for 10 years and each gets well over a 100,000 miles on the clock before my brother-in-law takes them for his go to work beaters and for his kids. Once the engine has reached break in, I switch the oil to Mobil1 and the change interval goes to 10,000 miles with a premium filter. I have NEVER had an engine problem with this regime and neither has my B-I-L. That covers 2 Toyotas, 2 Hondas, 3 Mazdas, 1 Saturn & 1 Ford (which we won't talk about). Our new '03 P5 will get this schedule also.

Ok.. my 2 cents (and no, they probably aren't even worth that). I, like probably 99% of y'all participate (ie: read) a lot of auto forums online. I find them to be a wealth of information.
With all the oil discussions I have read I don't think I have ever found *1* that has mentioned someone's engine failing due to an oil related problem, regardless of dino vs synthetic.
I do remember standing in a service department overhearing the service manager telling a customer about this one company car that some dude was driving came in because the engine block was seized. Turned out he had not changed the oil in a few years (I think it was like 5-6 years!) and only added oil when it was down. Now that is scary!
Needless to say if you change your oil too much, that's fine. If you go by the manual, that's fine. If you extend your oil changes, I don't think that's gonna hurt because you always hear about people doing it and it turns out fine!
Doesn't BMW/Mercedes have onboard oil monitors that tell you when to change your oil, and sometimes they go for like 10,000+ miles before the ""computer"" senses you need an oil change?

Cars don't come with special oil from the factory. Doing a break-in change is not necessary, but I've done it. I'd change my oil at 3000 mile intervals if I were using regular oil. I use Mobil 1 and change between 5-7000 miles now.
