have you ever looked under the hood of a focus or a ZX2, looks a hell of a lot like or engine. Don't forget that MAzda and ford have been swapping motors in each otherr cars for years. Who do you think made the motors in the Probes. I don't care if you bro is a mechanic or not just let this subjuect drop and for everyone else justdo what Mazda tells you to do.

Guess which is the Protege5 and which is the Focus ZX5. Is there even a difference? Let's see...Both 2.0L with the same Horsepower and Torque. Engine looks similar.(not quite by the way) Plus Ford owns 33.4% of Mazda and shares soooo many things with Mazda. Thus, it must be the same engine!!! Well, I'll let you decide. If you still think they're the same, I'm happy for you. A few things you need to know though. The Protege5, unfortunately will be based on the Focus with the next generation model, but just not yet. The Protege has a Type FSD engine, built in Hofu, Japan, which belongs to Mazda, not Ford, and sorry the Ford one is built in Hermosillo, Mexico. And Jhanson, for the last time, tell me if they're the same, since you're the Engineerer at Ford and all.

They know when the oil properties start to break down and where down your engine. I hate stupid ignorant people who think they know stuff cause they read it on a website.

College degrees

where down

"Ignorant" or just illiterate

Be careful who you hate!

I don't know if this thread is dead or not but I have an anecdote to add. I had an 83 Scirocco that I was the third owner of. I had the original records. The original owner got the oil changed at the dealer at the recomended 7500 mile intervals up to the first 150,000 miles or so. When I got it, the car was at 230,000 miles and started up first time every time. Ran smooth as s***. Personally, I run Amsoil and change it every 5000 mi. I deliver pizzas so I run it pretty hard. It may be too frequent, but it can't hurt.:p

Maybe you should check yourself too, buddy. Do you have a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering or work at an auto company? And who ever said working at an auto company means you know about oil and engines? The factory doesn't recommend 5000 miles anyway. According to the U.S. manual, it's 7500. At least I'm going by what an auto mechanic, who has been in the business for over 20 years, says about oil changes instead of listening to you. So maybe you should at least get your facts right, and stop hating stupid, ignorant people, like yourself. Ignorant people insult other people for their opinions and you seem to do that very well. Anyway, check your grammar next time before you post too: "..where down your engine." It's wear, so maybe you should go back to school and stop worrying if people have their degrees or not.

You didn't read the whole manual neither there buddy...

It says 7500 or if you drive in certain conditions, then 5000 miles. Just about everyone on this board falls into the 5000 mile category.

I change mine every 5000, just like the manual says.

And now the curve ball...

I've been using Mobil1 in my engines since 1979. I keep my cars for 10 years and each gets well over a 100,000 miles on the clock before my brother-in-law takes them for his go to work beaters and for his kids. Once the engine has reached break in, I switch the oil to Mobil1 and the change interval goes to 10,000 miles with a premium filter. I have NEVER had an engine problem with this regime and neither has my B-I-L. That covers 2 Toyotas, 2 Hondas, 3 Mazdas, 1 Saturn & 1 Ford (which we won't talk about). Our new '03 P5 will get this schedule also.

Ok.. my 2 cents (and no, they probably aren't even worth that). I, like probably 99% of y'all participate (ie: read) a lot of auto forums online. I find them to be a wealth of information.

With all the oil discussions I have read I don't think I have ever found *1* that has mentioned someone's engine failing due to an oil related problem, regardless of dino vs synthetic.

I do remember standing in a service department overhearing the service manager telling a customer about this one company car that some dude was driving came in because the engine block was seized. Turned out he had not changed the oil in a few years (I think it was like 5-6 years!) and only added oil when it was down. Now that is scary!

Needless to say if you change your oil too much, that's fine. If you go by the manual, that's fine. If you extend your oil changes, I don't think that's gonna hurt because you always hear about people doing it and it turns out fine!

Doesn't BMW/Mercedes have onboard oil monitors that tell you when to change your oil, and sometimes they go for like 10,000+ miles before the ""computer"" senses you need an oil change?

Do what's comfortable. :).. just make sure you change it. :P
To each their own!

haha, I think it's so funny that people get so uptight about this when like it was previously stated, nobody has problems because of oil really.

Well, everybody says, "Search First". At least he searched out an old thread instead of just posting the question to a chorus of "Why don't you use the search button?"

Cars don't come with special oil from the factory. Doing a break-in change is not necessary, but I've done it. I'd change my oil at 3000 mile intervals if I were using regular oil. I use Mobil 1 and change between 5-7000 miles now.
