Dealer oil change.....potential issue?

I just had my second oil change done at the dealer, and decided to make the switch to full synthetic. Anyways the oil that the dealer put in was mobil1 5w20. Reading the other oil posts I noticed that most people are using 5w30. What's the deal? Should the dealer have used 5w30 instead and just gave me the wrong oil? Will this cause any harm?

take it back or call. either somebody billed it out (put the wrong oil on your ticket) wrong, or the tech requested the wrong oil.

So you could have 5w30, and parts billed your for 5w20 on accident. OR, the tech requested the wrong oil and you have 5w20.

regardless of what happened, will running 5w-20 cause any potential problems? Or will it be just fine until the next oil change?

And it was def 5w20 that was used because I even asked the guy "Are you sure that 5w20 is right, cuz I used 5w30 last time?". To which he responded yes.
I am just hoping that it won't do anything bad to the engine, and that by just draining the oil and replacing it with the correct weight the problem will be fixed.

I had a bad experience on my first oil change there going to mobil 1. What made me not wanna go there no more and do it myself is that they didn't tighten my filter lid thingy enough and I was leaking oil. I don't trust them working on my car

I had the same thing happen with a routine oil change. Wet spot on my driveway and I was down near the bottom of the dipstick after 600 miles.

to which I respond by showing him the owners manual that calls for 5w-30 in the turbo engine and 5w-20 for the non turbo. That s*** pisses me off. If it was me I would be talking to mazda corporate about it and if my engine blew down the line I would blame the dealer who cant even properly oil change a new model car. You wont have a negatives to running the 5w-20 but you need to change it out wayy sooner because it will shear down from the heat and fuel dilution this car does to oils.

Same poop, different day with this issue. Seems as though some Mazda techs don't know their specs. Will 5W-20 do the motor harm? Who knows? Probably not, but I'd make it a point that you're paying for a service and you expect it to be done correctly. I mean, if the Mazda service department can't do the job correctly, who can? Not to mention that they'd the first ones to hang you by the short and curlies with warranty issues claiming that you didn't service the vehicle correctly.

I believe the base 3 takes 5w20 so the oil change guy at the dealer may not have known the speed takes 5w30. Unless you want to make them change it again and put the correct stuff in just keep an eye on it and change it again at 3k miles or 4 months whatever you hit first.

Dude, I would bust out the manual that comes with the car, force him to read it out loud to you and the service manager, make the change, AND get a coupon for a free one next time. And then don't return anyway. Changing your own oil is one of the few secret, manly rituals left to us in this age of banality...

I had my oil changed at my local dealer about 1,700 miles ago. A complimentary one. After the oil change, I went back a couple days later since the oil level was barely over the "L" mark. They topped it off with no problem. Unfortunately the dealer is 20 miles away.

This thread got me to thinkin' about the oil they used. I just got off the phone with the service writer and he verified that they used 5W-20 on mine. I told him that the manual clearly states 5W-30. He said they would swap out the oil for me since that's what I want to run, but he stated that 5W-30 is recommended and not required, and that they see "these vehicles" come in all the time and they use a 5W-20 Synthetic Blend. He wanted me to know that them putting in 5W-20 wasn't in error because 5W-30 isn't required but recommended. Anyways, I think it's poor excuse to make it sound like they know what's going on. And they apparently didn't know that the Speed3 requires 5.5 - 6 qts. of this 5W-20 Synthetic Blend they use since mine was low. I'm assuming they used the amount that is required in the Mazda3s? So I'm debating if I should even go back to get my free 5W-30 oil swap (they won't change out the oil filter) to which I know the level will be barely over the "L" mark or just run it a little while longer and swap it out myself with 5W-30 Synthetic since I'll be installing the Oil Filter Kit from Mazda.

I think it's time to go to Wal-Mart and pick up 6 qts. of Synthetic for some weekend fun :) Is Pennzoil Platinum the best for our cars? I think I've also read Castrol Syntec also is good? And I also saw Quaker State's Synthetic at Wal-Mart for $18 and change. aren't some folks running 5W-40 to keep the exhaust from blowing less smoke/fumes?

Would you want to go jogging with only a gallon of blood (just above L), when you really need two, maybe two and a half? Please either get the swap or do it yourself soon, for your poor car's sake...

LOL! Of course it wasn't their error. They've got an answer for everything. When they're looking to take money out of your wallet, they're the first ones to try to talk you into "recommended" service. As soon as you try to correct them on something, they use the same s*** against you. If you changed your oil yourself with something other than the "recommended" weight and you blew your motor up, they'd be the first ones to deny warranty work because you didn't use the recommended oil. Ask them why a certified Mazda service department is not using what Mazda recommends. I'd like to hear what he says about that. Really, I've got no issues with service manager admitting that they screwed up and offering to drain it out and give you a free change. Everyone makes mistakes, but when they dance around the fact that they screwed up so to avoid money out of their pockets, I've got no tolerance for it, which is why I don't bring my car to the dealer for anything except warranty work if need be, which I'm sure one day will bite me in the ass. This is a double edged sword.

jeez, there's no end to these stories of stealers putting in 20w oil in MS3s. Exactly how flipping hard is it for a mechanic to learn MS3 = 30w because of the turbo?

if they can't even get the oil weight right, what are the chances they'll be competent w/ bigger repairs? it's getting to the point where you have to bring in your own oil and stand next to the service bay to make sure the wrench jockey is not screwing something up. what happened to taking pride in your work & being competent at what you do for a living?

i swear that if i was this inefficient at my job, i'd get canned pronto. how can these ijots continue to cause damage to cars and still be employed?!? (notcool)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

So I called the service manager and he was very apologetic. He told me to bring the car in first thing on Saturday morning. The will just be draining out the old oil and putting in the new. Not too big of a deal I guess.

This has happened many times to me too over the years, that's why I change my own oil now... (yippy)

**** mazda...they did the same thing to me. i ran with 5-20 for 4500 miles. they don't think about the mz3 vs ms3. they're ******* idiots.
