Dealer oil change.....potential issue?

One more reason to take it elsewhere for maintenance. NEVER trust the dealer to KNOW what to do (an' they ain't gonna read the book!).

are you suggesting that it would be better taking it somewhere like pep boys, ez lube, jiffy lube etc????
For some reason I just do not feel comfortable taking my business to those places.

I took my car to the dealer the other day to have the oil changed. I had read a bunch of posts where the wrong oil was put in. Based on that I made it a point to ask the service manager to put in 5w-30. He said that's what they used. Of course when I got the work slip back it says that they used 5w-20.

When I questioned the guy about this, he assured me they used 5w-30 and it was just the printout that said 5w-20. I had read a bunch of other people had the same experience where the oil listed on the sheet was supposedly different than was used.

It's frustrating that you never really know what went into the car unless you did it yourself =(

Well you know the course of action next time then ;)

Installed the spin-on conversion this weekend along with the Fumoto/Qwik Valve and put in some Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. It's a good feeling to have knowing the oil level is right and the right quality oil is what's running my car.

Yes indeed. It's still frustrating though since they also rotate the tires and do inspections at the same time. They found a nail in one of the tires and fixed that as well as changing out one of the headlight bulbs that they thought was dim for no charge. After doing all the work on my previous car, it was nice to have someone else to dispose of the used oil...oh well. I'll have to look into the spin on conversion you're talking about.

Dude, I would bust out the manual that comes with the car, force him to read it out loud to you and the service manager, make the change, AND get a coupon for a free one next time. And then don't return anyway. Changing your own oil is one of the few secret, manly rituals left to us in this age of banality...

+1

The only problem with changing your own oil is that you have to save the receipts. I can totally see Mazda USA denying warranty work to someone that can't provide records for previous oil changes.

I save my receipts no matter who does the work... no biggie. I file everything I have done to my car...

Here Is the Sad Part

You can have the oil changed at the dealer.

You can save the receipts.

If you have a problem that Mazda NAO THINKS they can blame on the servicing dealer, theyll deny warranty and make you go through hell getting that denial reconsidered.

Ask how I know. http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123730901 (see thread)

It is week seven for my case. Still no resolution.

I like that,..................alot

jeez, there's no end to these stories of stealers putting in 20w oil in MS3s. Exactly how flipping hard is it for a mechanic to learn MS3 = 30w because of the turbo?

if they can't even get the oil weight right, what are the chances they'll be competent w/ bigger repairs? it's getting to the point where you have to bring in your own oil and stand next to the service bay to make sure the wrench jockey is not screwing something up. what happened to taking pride in your work & being competent at what you do for a living?

i swear that if i was this inefficient at my job, i'd get canned pronto. how can these ijots continue to cause damage to cars and still be employed?!? (notcool)
Well, you could obtain a degree, become registered, endure a painful HR dept, go thru a lenghty interview, get hired, and act like a total ass, involve HR, the union, Call IG, call JCAHO, rat out every coworker you come in contact with, refuse overtime, call in sick whenever you wish AND
KEEP YOUR JOB

its all good

Well, certainly NOT Pep Boys or Jiffy Lube, but I do take to a "quik lube" place. I stand right in front of the car while they're working (try THAT at the dealer), and I monitor every step. I watch what oil they use, and I'm down on my hands and knees watching the guy who's draining the oil and changing the filter (the spin-on conversion will make that less nerve-wracking). They're always the same crew and many of them are gear-heads. I've taken all my vehicles (under warranty -- I do the non-warranty stuff myself) to the same location for a lot of years.

Its scenarios like this which completely validate the time and effort I took on finding a shop to do my oil changes. I take it to a Goodyear place (which I am constitutionally opposed to BTW) because I dont have stands or ramps etc to take off the front diffuser. BUT the only guy who even LOOKS at my car is the guy who works there that has a black 07 speed 3. If you cant trust a fellow owner, you cant trust anyone.

I was just wandering around here, and being a post *****, probably correct, i wanted to say something too. I have had good and bad experiences with Mazda and other shops including some of the quicky lubes. I always bring my own oil or lubes. But i have been overfilled under filled and had s*** not tight, plus had an interior all oily on my daughter's car from Delta Sonic. They made good and then some but as consumers we need to hold the servicers responsible. It is not like the olden days when the same guy worked on your car the whole life of the vehicle and knew you and your vehicle inside out. A shame, that. I am very particular about my car and want the best for it, but it seems i need to stay on top of ANY thing that is touched on the car. If i can do it myself i try to. I guess i have been screwed over enough over the years to be a little bitter. Hold the bastards accountable an if errors are made demand satisfaction. Ok i am done with this ranting. ps meet your mechanic and make it personal, it makes a difference.

No doubt
