used to drain oil into instead of the ground

huh. i've never seen those before. i use a catch pan thing (brain fart on what they are actually called)

Sign what paper? I have never signed anything before they do an oil change. It is clearly marked on their board for a "Standard oil change", which is what I requested. No where did the service guy tell me that CX-7 oil is special. For standard dino 5w30 there is no way in hell it costs $33 for 5-6 qts of oil. He even stated "There is no way for me to know evey type of oil for a specific make or model". I mean isnt that his job? I work in the banking industry and if I didn't know a certain type of Bank note or annuity, I am pretty sure I would be out of work...

Since when is $45 for a standard oil change a good price? My 350z at nissan only cost $25 every oil change. 5w30 standard oil....

Wow... I mean really? I guess teenagers have less to worry about, so paying a fortune for oil is acceptable.

Can't say I was different... If you aren't a teenager, then please don't call people idiots for stating a fact.

EDIT:

For the record, I did discover that Mazda/Ford service depo's use a synthetic blended oil which would make it a "special cx-7 oil".

Sorry for the confusion.

they probably use Motorcraft 5w30 semi-syn. the retail price on that is $4/qt, and you need 6 qts, so thats $25. The retail price for the oil filter is $7.50 approx, so $32 for parts. only $13 for labor isn't bad.

my protege only used 4.5 qts and the filter was only 3....that was a much cheaper oil change.

yeesh, I promise I will never complain about the cost of an oil change again.

Thanks for all the responses though... I now understand *i guess*

Is it me or do you contradict yourself in your statement...

Uh, no.

I said almost all, and then estimated that to be about 80%.

Look beyond brands and find out where these companies get their oil if you think I am wrong. But I'm not, so it's a waste of your time.

The point was, besides the high end blends, or brands, all motor oil is coming from the same source in this country. The guy has a point, oil is oil. Also, it is not an opinion, you can check it yourself, or STFU, Keno, ForceFed. Have you guys looked in the mirror lately? Hello pot, meet kettle.

Now I am not with him on the price being unfair, seems perfectly reasonable to me, and is about what I pay for the Speed6.

I agree with you for the most part oil is oil but it really comes down to the additives, detergent, ect, ect thats added to the oil. Thats like saying water is water.... tap water taste completly different then filtered, spring, ect, ect... yes its all water but its not all the same.

He in fact did.

Not to mention he is very closed minded once has has a set opinion on something.

Good 'ol Joe can never be wrong.

this is exactly what makes all the brands different, most of it may come from the same place, but the difference is how all the brands process it into the final product...Good try though Knox

$45 bucks is most likely half of the 1hour shop labor rate. Sam Galloway is huge and has a lot of overhead so don't go looking for a deal. For my money yeah that is high as I could get 10 qts of synthetic and 2 filters for less than $45.

UOA puts all debate to rest about oil quality or lacktherof.

This thread fails hard.

1-Enough with the name calling and bickering. I won't have it.

2-"Oil is oil" is NOT the case. If you want to talk about low end brands, go for it. But we're talking about synthetic here, and there are differences between each one. Don't believe me? You can send your oil out to be tested.

3-Wal Mart DOES have it's own oil, last I checked. And yes, it's crap.

4-Semi-synthetic or not, $45 is pretty standard fare for an oil change, especially if they have to remove a splash guard. Got a problem with that? Buy some ramps and do it yourself next time. Even so, it will cost you at least $30 to do this yourself.

dont go blamin urself lol, some ppl just get to serious about stuff.

I would call your manager and complain. (moon)

yeah, I know why its so expensive: you can't get into that dang engine! I'm new here and am trying to learn HOW to change the oil. I'm not dumb, just a Toyota Tundra owner with a 2004 Mazda6 owner for a girlfriend. I doubt any of these local oil change places (you know, the ones for $19.99) even bothered changing that internal oil cartridge. Where can I go to learn about this stuff?
