Dead Pedal Fix

I just picked up our new CX-5 a few days ago and I've gotta agree with other posters.......the dead pedal carpet is going to be absolutely ruined when the snow, slush, salt and sand of Canada's winter hits it. Today I winterized it.

Went to Home Depot and picked up a RUBBER stair tread. There were less expensive vinyl ones available, but the rubber one was much, much sturdier and had a nice 90 degree lip that fits nicely on the edge of the dead pedal. The price was right around 5 bucks. I cut the stair tread to size and attached three strips of 1" wide self-adhesive backed velcro to the back. The adhesive on the velcro stuck really well to the rubber dead pedal cover (notice it is no longer a stair tread). When I put it in place, the velcro strip also seemed to grab the carpet as well. So now it's ready for anything the Canadian winter wants to throw at it.

I wish the next winterizing project was as easy and inexpensive.......Winter Tires and Wheels. Getting ready to fork out about $1,500 bucks I think.

Heres a picture of the stair tread product I purchased at Home Depot:

Thank you!! been looking for ideas of what to put in that area. I will try it this weekend. Great find.

Thanks for the idea.

Did one of our posters show a picture of Husky mats that had a full cover on dead pedal?...

The guys on the German cx5 forums had a metal dead pedal made for that area...
Not enough people on this forum yet to try and make something similar.

I'd buy the metal deadpedal cover, (similar to one on my Lexus from factory shown in the picture, see metal pedal in lower left).

Nice, I used the vinyl baseboard material, and it is working great, but I will look for the stair tread next time I am in the box stores...

Done a similar thing myself using thin rubber car mat cut to size. You only need to use the "hook" side of the velcro stuck to your "dead pedal cover". The carpet acts the eye side of the velcro gripping it like glue! Mine looks like it was factory fitted!

The final product.....

I guess I should have attached a picture of the final product in the first place, but here it is....better late than never.

Wow that looks very good, blends right in. I see why you used stair tread, with the overlap on right side.

Noticed you put some rubber mats over the existing carpet mats which is not a good move man, be careful that don't slide around or get in the way of brake/gas pedal. It's a decent look as well but I like the studded ones that Happydaze put up as they come over the lip. Good stuff though...

Thanks Gio. I know the manual says Mats on mats is a big no no but they aint budging believe me. The lipped version upgrade is nice but they are not available in the UK. (lol2)

couldn't find anything quite like that on lowes or home depot's site, have to check stores personally, would be great to have over the lip of my weathertechs so anything on them melts/drains into tray

Stealing another's idea, I did the rubber-stair-tread-for-dead-pedal install. During the process I noted that in less than 1000 km the right heel area of the carpet mat was beginning to wear. With lots of materials left over, I cut a rounded corner rectangle the size of the heel insert area on the carpet and - viola! a rubber right heel rest. Seemed a natural progression.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone.. Used a piece of spare carpeted mat that was laying around at work. Win.
