Can someone tell me what damping or dampening is? I have tockico illumina's with stock springs. The car has always felt fine with the exception that at slow speeds the car is overly stiff. However, 30k miles later, the handling all of a sudden feels different. So, my question is, w/out saying what my car is doing, what is damping/dampening exactly, and would I all of a sudden get it after this many miles? Thanks.

Damping: a reduction in the amplitude of an oscillation or vibration as a result of energy being dissipated as heat. (the shock absorber does that dissipation to slow the motion of the spring)

Dampening: To make damp. Synonym: Moisten

The short answer to your question: You probably blew a strut, or you have an endlink or sway bar mount that's broken.

Blown strut, huh? That was the last thing I was thinking. Makes sense though. I guess I will have my mechanic check it out. The car is bouncy even on flat serfaces. And it is not because I have stiff springs. On occasion the car's suspension seems to travel a little too much in a high speed turn. IDK, might be my imagination, but it just doesn't feel right.

Crawl under, have a peek, see what's out of place, grab on s*** & see what's loose. See if there has been a dampening of one of your dampers. Then maybe let someone else try if you find nothing.

Hahaha this thread is full of win.

unfortunately for me all four of my K sport dampers have had some dampening :(

After adjusting my shocks I realized I was just use to the smooth ride of the corolla rent-a-car. Glad you guys had fun with this. :)
