CX9 passenger side airbag recall

:
2010 CX-9 FWD Touring
I got a letter from Mazda about a passenger side airbag recall for the CX-9. It says not to let anyone ride in the passenger seat until parts are made available.

Anyone else get this? Kind of a major PITA. It was waiting for me in my mailbox after I finished a ~1700 mile road trip.

wow, agreed, what a PITA, looks like Takata airbags now affecting 2007-2011 CX-9's, sharp fragments if passenger side airbag deploys......

Got the same letter too. Please post if any of you got the replacement. Just wondering on parts availability.

Got this the other day. I wonder how long it will take to get a replacement.

It is kind of bush league by Mazda to not recall all the cars with these bags - this Zone A and Zone B crap is shady. I have a Subaru that was recalled for Takata airbags; they recalled them all but are prioritizing the cars registered in "high humidity" areas. Sooner or later all the bags are going to go bad, I hope this is an attempt to prioritize replacing bags by geography, and not and attempt to by Mazda/Takata to "run out the clock" and delay replacing all of them.

If Takata survives this affair, I will be surprised.

If the entire dash needs to be removed for this, then I'm not getting the recall done. Only if there is a dash top panel or airbag top cover. It looks like there is only one panel over the airbag, but if not and the whole dash needs to come out, no way Jose! Chances of getting in a wreck with a passenger sitting in the right seat severe enough to deploy the passenger bag are very slim, and the chances of "metal fragments" injuring someone if there is an airbag deployment are even slimmer. Just sayin'

Got the same letter on my sons 2007 Honda Civic. Says parts will not be available until sometime this fall and not to let anyone ride in passenger seat until its fixed.

I got the same letter and asked the dealer to disconnect the airbag until parts come in. He said no can do per federal NTHSA guidelines. Anyone know a quick way to disable the air bag? I's rather have not airbag than one that might explode.

You could unplug the passenger side front impact sensor (after first disconnecting the battery, of course) but at your own risk. I dont know if that is all it would take or not. I think the odds of having a few tiny pieces of metal fragments escape the inflator are very very slim. And the odds of those fragments causing significant injury even slimmer. That airbag punching you in the face alone will do plenty of damage to your face.

I have been driving my mom's CX-9, and am about to get a subaru forester 2010 both are on the recall for the takata air bags. Neither of them have the available parts yet, that I found have.

However, the chances are very slim of it deploying. I read something like out of 300,000 airbag deployments, a few hundred had the fragments break through the bag. Something like .8% chance IF that specific airbag is deployed. However, 10 people have died in the US because of the fragments though. I don't have a passenger most of the time so I am not too concerned, however do I really want to be responsible for a close friends death because of ignoring the problem? Not too sure.
