My current CX-9 is a 2011, previously I owned a 2008. My 2011 has the Info option and I have mine set on average MPG. My mileage is all over the place, seriously depending a lot on what fuel I put in it. My GT likes Chevron and the new Costco blend with the detergents added for some reason.
My mileage can range from 24.9 to 18 mpg. I live in Phoenix and we are now over 100 every day so the AC is on at all times, consequently I get 19 on average with mostly urban freeway driving. I took a run to Tucson, about 120 miles, before AC was necessary and I got 24.5 the whole trip. So, as the saying goes: your mileage may vary

I did a science project w/o my kid once.
The headwind impacts MPG a lot.
When the wind is strong, the MPG difference between headwind and tailwind is
shocking for CX9. We are talking about 23mpg to 17mpg under constant speed.
Just another big factor to consider.

Recently stuck my ScanGauge back in for a few weeks last month after an update from LinearLogic. Calibrated at the same pump for 3 fills before a trip from Boston to NYC. Averaged 19MPG on the way down and just a hair over 20MPG on the way back.
Always use the cheapest gas such as 87 or 89 octane. I still remain disappointed by the MPG. Everything else exceeds my expectations on my first Mazda.

Dang--just did a road trip Philly to Boston and back. I got just under 20 mpg--all highway.
You cannot post your mileage and not say how fast you traveled. I saw the 26MPG at 65MPH. That is understandable. But go say 70 MPH and it will take hit.
The EPA should be abolished. Everyone thinks that - almost. All they do is make it difficult for businesses to make a reasonable profit. Because of the EPA I now can't buy a freakin gas can that I can hardly open and spills more gas on my lawn mower than goes in the tank. So how is that better?
You need to do your own tests. Forget the EPA.

Goes on and on. There's two sides, just stating my side.
I know nothing more than I read and experience day to day in my life.
I want a diesel cx5. Its the only way I'd get one. Luckily the EPA can't stand in the way of this one. Its clean enough.
Just finished a 2100 mile trek from Texas to Washington State pulling a Kendon Motorcycle Trailer loaded with a queen size mattress and a Suzuki C109R Motorcycle.
Was doing 75 or so most of the way and got anywhere between 12 to 17 MPG depending on the terrain and how my foot was on the pedal.
Lots of hills and mountains to go thru as we took the route thru New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
The CX9 did a great job pulling the trailer up and down the hills and when I needed to pass some one the acceleration was on par with what I expected pulling about 1200 to 1600 pounds of weight behind it.
This was a really good test of the vehicle for me this was one of the reasons I selected the vehicle as I needed something that could tow my Motorcycle(s) and trailer but did not want a truck.

We have a 2011 CX-9 GT front wheel drive only with 17,000 miles on the odometer. Just got back from our family vacation. Me, wife and 2 kids (17 and 12 yr. old). Started in Charleston, SC to Washington DC to Nashville, TN and back to Charleston. Drove a total of 2100 miles. Our average for the entire trip was 19mpg. About 90% interstate and 10% city driving. Best tank we got was 21.6mpg calculated. In pure city driving, my light footed wife gets about 15mpg. All this being said, our previous 2007 CX-9 with the 3.5 ltr. engine got over 25 mpg highway and 17mpg city.
Most of cars we have owned in the past and including my 2011 VW Touareg TDI beats the EPA sticker ratings. Our 2000 Honda Odyssey got almost 30mpg highway but sticker only showed 26mpg. The VW window sticker shows 19 mpg city - 28mpg highway. With my heavy foot, I always get at least 25mpg city and 33mpg highway averaging 75mph.
Just got back from Paris, Tn (started in NJ) about 1000 miles each way (about 76 mph cruise controlled) averaged 19-24 mpg though initially went across the mountains, then came back relatively flat I81...funny thing is I had to reset the consumption meter to make the actual averages display.
