2017~2025: CX-5 Rear Liftgate Rattle

I have this rattle on each side of my trunk hatch right above the taillights that rattles when the car idles and drives me crazy. Anyone have this and if so what was the solution?

That's a plastic trim that can be removed. Probably is missing some clips. If you have some plastic tool, you could try to gently remove it and you'll see how it's mounted and see if there are any clips missing. I've done some work on my car and had to remove this trim. There is a lot of dust and/or fine dirt accumulating under. A good opportunity for you to clean that area. Did you replace the back window recently? The trim must come off when they replace the back window and maybe the trim was not reinstalled properly.

I haven’t done any work on that back window or liftgate. The rattle started right after I bought the car and slowly is getting worse. It used to just be one side right above the taillight but now it’s on both sides. I was imaging some nut/bolt came loose but it looks like a bunch of plastic clips. Not sure I want to dismantle it without a clear solution. I think I’ll just try shoving some foam up there or something. Thanks for the info!

Update: I removed all the plastic interior trim of the lift-gate in search of a loose nut/bolt and there was nothing there to be tightened. As ADS-B noted above it seems to be the exterior trim piece. I tried to peel it back a bit to take a look and seemed to have snapped a few plastic things. I put some double sided foam tape to stick it back together. Unfortunately the rattle lives on and possibly made it worse haha

Get these: Auto Trim Removal Tool Kit and Double side tape .

Once you remove the trim, clean it and then apply the tape on the edges of the trim, both sides. You should be able to see where the tape is supposed to be applied. Most likely the trim is missing the tape or it's damaged.

I do have those and some double sided decal tape. These are the plastic clips/plastic things that seemed to snap off, there was three of them. When you removed yours did you just peel it off from the outside of the car?

Yes. What you see in the picture, that’s how it came off. You can also see the double side tape on the bottom left corner.

If you look at this picture, the only holes are for the big inserts. Everything else is glued/double side tape.

Ohh wow interesting. Ok, so what I think happened in my case - is the black plastic piece that is attached to the inside of the removable trim piece stayed attached to the car while I was peeling it back and it snapped off from their attachment points to the trim piece. And it seems the black plastic piece is part of the trim piece and is meant to stay connected to it ;( .. This gives me an idea that I will try when I get home. Thanks for all of the help/info, I will let you know how it goes.

I can't believe nobody else has had this problem!
