My 3 cuts out at 120mph. Does anyone know how to get around this, or is it even worth trying to get around it? What is the top speed if it dosen't cut out? Just asking. Any info would be good!

I seem to remember being told once that cars have something called a governer's cap on it that limits the top speed of the car. Even though your speedometer says 160 or whatever, it can only go to whatever the chip allows it to go to. I thought I knew someone who had it removed or changed, but he told me that is was highly illegal if you're caught. But I guess going that fast would make you much harder to catch.

Maybe someone else can back this up or not. I'm not 100% sure if this is right.

yeah, its a limiter, the fuel cuts out, some cars have products (chips, programmer, etc) that raise and or eliminate the limiter, or fuel cut off. I had a 2001 silverado which had a fuel cutout of 98 mph and with my hypertech i raised it to 124, so take that for what its worth, there is no need to go faster than the cut out on the 3, which is more like 118-119. I will say that the 3 gets up to 120 pretty quick and seems like it could keep going.

The N. American-spec Mazda3's limiter kicks in at 188km/h, which equals roughly 117mph. If you're going down a hill at that time then you may go a bit faster, but other than that I don't know of anyone who has chipped or otherwise removed the limiter.

Any updates on this? It's pretty easy to take the 3 up to 117. I know this car can go much faster than that.

Go to the Mazda Rev It Up in Chicago and ask the techs there if there's a way to get around it.

Other than that, we have to wait for an aftermarket company to come out with a new ECU chip.

Ok, this is something that I read about 3 years ago in a Nissan forum.

I used to have a '90 240SX and they had a limiter set at 115mph. Not so fun. The solution some guys did was this:

There are 2 wires coming out of the transmission. These wires go to the speed sensor, this tells your engine/computer/guages/ what your mph/rpm's are. What these guys would do it wire in a switch so that anytime they wanted to go faster than 115 they would just hit the switch and cut off the sensor. Drawback of this is that your loose your rpm/mph readouts on your guages.

Take that for what it's worth...

btw: I'm sure superchips or JET has a chip that give "100 million fwhp" that might get rid of the limiter as well as "give horsepower".

Things change over 14 years. The computer can read or calculate speed from various inputs. Everything is tied together these days. Transmission computer, body computer, entertainment, engine management... The computer likely limits speed based on a calculation of gear and engine speed. There isn't anything you can cut to get around it anymore.

If the speed is limited electronically, is it possible for a performance shop to change it?
