Custom Turbo MP5

Valve Cover

mrpopnfresh said:
I like the setup there. I especially like how the valve cover exposes the cam gears. Was that your stock one, just cut to expose them, or did you get it off another mazda?

It was cut off. I had to make a bracket to hold the Cam Position Sensor. DO NOT CUT IT OFF. The Bracket took me one week to perfect and the car will not run if this sensor is off by a little bit.
(Major Pain In The Ass)

Cut the back side off, but do not cut the sensor mount off. I'm thinking about getting a new one.

You can however remove the valve cover and polish it because it's aluminium. Use a palm sander and start at 200 Grit, Work your way to a glowing shiney cover. Get a new gasket from Mazda before you remove anything.

any answer to this Q yet Brian MP5T?

I'm sorry man, if you were talking about the EIC Adjustment. My answer is Set it and forget it. It is fuel based on manifold pressure. It is seemless.

Later...Brian..If that wasn't the question, shoot it again.

Yup, If you look at this attachment, you will see why it's like that. I needed to put the turbo in a diferent place due to room. This design is custom. The manifold is made from 304 stainless steel and mandrel bent pipes. The turbo sits on the square fitting and the wastegate ( Tial ) sits on the beveled port.

UPDATE ON MP5T

The JIC-FLT-A1 and A2 were not available so I was offered a sweet ass deal on a set of Tein-SS coilovers... The are the s*** and would now be able to live without them now that they are installed...

Part 2.

Originally the cam position sensor was mounted on a seperate bracket. It was dificult to adjust and proved to be a major flaw. Only 5000 Rpm was useable for the longest time. I ordered a new one and have an adjustable pulley for the intake cam. Plans are in progress but here is a picture of the new valve cover mod to allow for the adjustments...

Some of your sentences on your update are hard to understand, they don't make any sense. Otherwise, nice pictures.

SWEET!!! Hows the ride with those TEIN's?
Unreal, There is a complete thread that I started on the subject, Just look at my public profile and select to see all the threads I started. It will be under TEIN-SS...

brian, brian, brian...

you're car is getting too sweet... i mean, really... reading the whole thread, my head is about to explode and my eyes are bleeding.
go to malcolm's this weekend.. :)

btw, what you doing with your old coilovers?

i've been meaning to ask you... how did you get the maf to read charge air? i've heard that if you put a maf after a turbo, it becomes unhappy and will not function properly. and won't it get messed up when the charge air reflects off the throttle body and backwards through the reverse side of the maf then out from the bov? that's already metered air. i'm very confused about that... i've wanted to do that for the longest time, but i was all befuddled by this predicament.

very nice brian!! you get my vote for one of the top 5 pro 5's on the board!!(first)

Damn brian I love that turbo set-up (first) , your the "mad scientist" I like how everything is custom. You should definitely contact turbo magazine and see if they can put you in an aritcle or on the cover. It would be sweet to finally see some recognition for our P5's. Keep up the good work (2thumbs) I can't wait to see what else you have planned.

I'll be there, Call me, Malcum has the number... Also, The coilovers are already gone my friend. Sorry. I just ordered an ACT Stage IIR clutch tonight. It will be here in one week and installed in one week and one day! The ******* thing just isn't holding 10+ in 3rd anymore and I'll be damned if some puke in a CRX is going to think his car is fast just because I have to throttle back in 2,3,4, :) Release The EVIL!!!

The Mass Air will read as long as there are no reverse flow spikes, such as a Blow Off Valve oppening too close to the Mass Air. Keep in mind as well that this ECU was never designed for boost and I have added Two Extra injectors on a stand alone, rather than changing the stockies and Re-Mapping the ECU??? I'm concerned that the MSP might react differently to this somehow.

If you look at where it is (Mass Air), it is as close to the throttle body as I could allow for, keeping in mind the room for the extra injectors...

This is also the reason that my blow off valve is at the turbine and not the throttle body. The air "reverse charge" is minimized when the blow off opens because of the ammount of plumbing that has to empty first, by the time that the minimal ammount of air that is trapped between the Mass Air and the TB has to blow back, the engine has already started to pull air through the throttle body on it's own. I don't know if that makes sense. In theory, the Blow Off should be at the TB, But if you wanted to think about what it's two main functions are...

1. Reduce a shockwave of Compressor Surge.
2. Keep the compressor spooled by releaseing Charge.

A Very important word comes up...Compressor...
What better way to reduce surge than to open a hole at the source?

So far it's the only way that I have had the blow off and no problem with stalling and believe me, I have tried them all. No CEL as of yet and it has been like this for more than 20,000Km. You might want to reinforce the plastic parts that support the Mass Air as they were never designed to recieve 10+Psi of boost... I hope this was a help. I do not know how this would react on a MSP. It seems that adding a turbo to a N/A car is easier than changing a turbo car...

I might have a look at some local magazines soon, Thanks for the props, It's nice to hear from time to time. As you can imagine, I see it every day and have been working on it for over one year now. It's easy to forget just how strange it must look to someone who has never seen it before...
