custom gauge cluster

i am currently building a custom gauge cluster. the reason i am doing it is because i havent been able to find a pocket (the one that goes below the radio) that fits correctly. i always have a gap or something, whatever it always looks like butt. so i decided to try my luck at making a custom gauge cluster. i am building a cluster to accomodate three gauges and my head unit. i am putting the h/u on the bottom, and then the gauges on top. the gauges will have an angle to them so they will be easier to see. this is the first step of the project. i made a template to fit how i wanted to, or at least i think, and now i am applying the first layer of fiberglass.

ok, this should be a little better pic. this is after two coats of fiberglass and a fast sand. at least you get an idea, hopefully it will be pretty close to done tomorrow night, at least ready for paint.

I need to learn how to work with fiberglass! That is gonna look hella cool when it's finished.

I've always thought it would be cool to have a gauge pod that goes on the dash itself, like a WRX. Its a little enclosure and fits 3 gauges, looks like 52mm ones ... I wonder if you could mod the WRX one to fit.

I always thought overhead consoles were really cool too, but I lack the skill to to fabricate one. Something like maybe what comes in rear-view mirrors these days, like temperature, direction heading (North, South, etc) and maybe a spot for your own temperature readings, like before and after intercooler, overhead temperature .... I'm an instrumentation nut :).

heh thats similar to what I am making right now...but my gauges are a little further North :-)

thanks guys, i just got done sanding it down, got the proper fit on all my gauges, and am now applying some body filler to smooth it out so i can paint it. i really thought i would end up messing up and backing out of the project, but ive made it pretty far and it doesnt look to shabby. maybe by sunday night or monday i will have a finished pic. oh, does anyone know where the sending unit for the water temp goes in the block at, it wouldnt happen to be the one right above where the oil pressure sending unit goes in would it?????

Looks a bit bulky in the pics. Have you tried it out inside the car? Does it stick out too much on the right side or does it look okay/

no one side is angled so he doesnt have to lean to see the far right side gauge..i think it looks dope..how hard is it to do all that stuff? care to make me one?

I know what he's doing, but imagine sitting in the passenger seat looking at it. From that angle, does it seem bulky?

no it really doesnt stick out that far, because this is attaching to the dash behind the silver trim peice that goes around the radio. so it has about 1/4 or more of an inch that is not even seen. i just put a coat of black paint on it to see how rough she is, after that i have to get a T to hook up my water temp gauge. i might do that and i might not today?????? ill take a pic when it is about how i like it. (i was looking at the pics above, and they really dont do it justice)

sweet, you know if it looks good we'll volunteer you to start making them for everyone

Watch out dude...thats how I got started giving up all my free time to make antennas! It looks like its going to turn out great. I love to see other people making instead of buying. It really makes this forum unique.
