Crappy gas mileage

Re: Rev at Start

I've used Shell products for the last 12 years and my father for over 25 years. I've had two Hondas and now a P5, my father has had GM cars for as long as I can remember and he has had boats for I don't know how long. We NEVER had problems. I did ask some friends about this and yes, Chrysler products are very sensible to this additive. Shell said it was especially bad in the winter. They no longer use this additive.

1 Imperial gallon = 4.546092 litres
1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
1 kilometer = .6214 mile

To check your m/g : fill up to the cap on your last fill up of the month, do normal fill-ups for the month then fill up to the cap again at the end of the month. Using conversions you see here, you'll be able to check average for the month. I use a spreadsheet with formulas every month and I know exactly how fuel efficient my car is. You can also verify differences in winter/summer driving conditions, and also according to the way you drive, speed IS a major factor.

Gas tank on the P5 is 55 litres, but you can add a lot more if filled up to the gas cap.

Have fun.

the best I've done with my P5 is 33.3m/g??? I think it's a bit high for a car in this class.

if you got 33.3 MPG out of your P-5....be proud...VERY PROUD....that is the BEST I have heard ANYONE getting with the car....and considering that the window sticker only claimed 31 Highway.....you have done well.

Hello Sir Nuke

Please remember that this is 33.3miles per IMPERIAL gallon! I should get between 37 to 39 mpg...

OHHHHHHHH I see...I forgot you are using those LITTLE gallons up there! lol

see...here in TEXAS...we use the BIG gallons! lol

World of Wheels

FWIW: Just re-reading an old World of Wheels article (a Canadian Car Magazine).. they had (and still do..) have a long term P5 and they got 39-40mpg (Canadian gallons. ;) ) as their best P5 mileage ever... not bad for a heavy footed car mag. But that was their best.
As long as I get in the 30's I'm happy. My other car is a V8, so I'm happy to have something decent. :P

i get about 500km per tank... roughly 310.6855961 miles per tank for you US guys. i do alot of highway driving. After i got my intake and exhaust, i've gotten better mileage... frees up some power robbed by the stock intake and exhaust.

Sorry Sir Nuke, WE use BIG gallons

1 us gallon = 3.785litres
1 Imperial gallon = 4.546092litres

That's why we get MORE miles per gallon. On a gas tank, I can usually drive 600km easy (roughly 375miles).

Red P5, Man, Tinted Hood protector, K&N air filter

Mileage

I took delivery of my 2002 Protege5, Sunlight Silver, Moonroof, Wind Deflector, Polished Chrome Rims, Tape Player, Mats, Alarm System, Cargo Net on December 6, 2001. I drive +/- 24 miles on way to work. Driving includes highway and back, country road. This, combined with miscellaneous driving makes for an average of 29 MPG. No modifications to vehicle. On just highway driving, the mileage really improves.

OOPS! lol

well you stated that you were getting 33.3 MPG (imperial) and that converts to 27.73 MPG (US)....so thats not so bad.....

While on this subject, I'm only seeing about 20-22mpg (US) out of my auto P5. It doesn't matter if my wife or I am driving the car and doesn't matter if it is city driving or on a road trip. I expected better. On a side note, I am running a 205-50R16 tire versus the standard 195-50R16 so my speedometer/odometer is a little off. The odometer should register about .98 miles for every actual mile traveled but not enough to have that crappy of a gas mileage. Has anyone actually been to the dealer and had a fix?

-edit- Need to add that I've got about 12,000 miles on the car so break in period is definately not an issue here.

My mileage improved ever so slightly after I went back to the dealer and complained about it. I went from about 22MPG to 25 MPG. I've been wondering about trying a tank of premium gas or one of those fuel injector cleaners.

My gas mileage seems to vary greatly all the time even though my driving habits are pretty much identical from tank to tank. I've got a 5speed Pro5 with 9500 miles on it. I get anywhere from 310 miles/tank to 375 miles/tank. Quite a big difference I think, seeing as how my driving habits are always the same. Mixed highway/city streets on the way to and from work, a total of about 40 miles. Then some trips to the store or dinner or what have you.

Hello Gyre
I've read somewhere that Premium gasoline is good only for high performance cars. Since octane is an ingredient that slows the burning process, thus making the cycle longer, it may even dammage, on a long term basis, any engine not made for high octane fuels. Look into your car's manual to see what is the octane level required, I believe it's only 87, so regular is perfect. Also, some fuel injector cleaners are real junk, better ask your dealer on what Mazda recomends.

What did the dealer do to improve from 22 to 25?

Thanks

Here's what I think about gas prices

You guys get amazing gas mileage. I checked my last tank, I only got around 400km. :( Granted it's mostly city driving, oh well, guess I shouldn't complain. It's not a big deal, just disappointing.

87 octane is all you need for the 2.0L motors - anything else is a waste of money - you won't see better mileage, and might even see decreased performance.

Also, the P5 manual expressly states that using injector cleaners is not recommended - it may even void your warranty.

About the half tank/good mileage, then getting crappy mileage in the end thing~~~ it's because ALL gas gauges are non-linear. They do this for a sensory perception science thing~~ "oh I have been driving around for 100 miles, and the needle is still on Full~~ in all reality, your tank is over 1/4 gone. Don't believe me??~~ Add gas after you drove 100 miles or so, when needle still says full, and you WILL put in a quarter tank of gas.
