Cracked Sunroof

hi all

just wondering if anyone else has this.

my sunroof has a U shaped crack in it.
it's like a hairline crack and it's only visible and can only be felt from inside the car.

i wouldn't have noticed it had the dirt not gathered in the crack.

see my bad example below :

___________ <- front of sunroof
U

the crack is the U

would this be covered under warranty?

I heard that if you tint an untinted sunroof it will crack. I'm not sure exactly how it does this, but this is from a very respectable window tinting shop in the area.

Is your's tinted?

Hmmm... I'm not sure about this one... if you can't tint an untinted sunroof, then you'll never actually be able to have a tinted sunroof - it's going to start out without tint.

no mines not tinted.....i see no point in tinting it cause we have a sun shade

Do Not Tint your Sunroof

I heard that if you tint an untinted sunroof it will crack. I'm not sure exactly how it does this, but this is from a very respectable window tinting shop in the area.

The reason is this. If you tint the window, when the sun is beaming down on the sunroof the glass expands and as it cools it contracts. If you tint the sunroof when it tries to expand it can't because is it be constricted by the tint. The glass was not designed to take this type of stress, therefore it cracks.

You do need to get that taken care of though. If it starts leaking or worse it ends up breaking apart while your driving it ould cause some problems.

Hmmm... I'm not sure about this one... if you can't tint an untinted sunroof, then you'll never actually be able to have a tinted sunroof - it's going to start out without tint.

If you want some sort of darkness to your sunroof you need to replace the entire glass piece with darker glass, not tint. Now, the only issue is trying to find one to fit a P5.

Good Luck to you both.

I just can't believe that a non-factory tinted sunroof with crack...there can't be that much difference between the amount of sun the other windows receive and the sunroof.

Yes - mine's tinted...no probs (yet?)

i had mazda look at it and they said that they have never seen this happen before and that none of their reps had seen this before. they asked for a second opinion so i took it to an auto glass place where the guy said that it was a scratch and not a crack.

i told this to mazda and they said it's not covered under warranty.

so i told him that the scratch actually goes under the black seal at the front of the sunroof which leads me to believe that i received the car in that condition.

the service guy made up some bullsh*t and said that it wasn't covered.

now i had gone to another mazda dealership where the service guy said that if it was up to him he would replace it under warranty but that his service manager would have to look at it.

how can i make a scratch on my sunroof that goes UNDER a factory seal?

i'll be calling the regional mazda office about this one
