So yesterday, on my 21st birthday i decided to try and clear a smudge off my windshield and when i looked up i had about 20 ft of room before i hit the car in front of me, so i slammed on the breaks and still smashed into the woman in front of me. I only post this because my air bags did not go off. I'm pretty sure i was going somewhere from 25-30mph when i hit. Has anyone heard of anything with airbags not deploying at an accident? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

p.s. pics soon

It all depends on how hard and the angle of the impact. If it was not a real hard hit like the car in front of you moved forward with you at that low of speed I could see it not going off. I use to work at a car rental company and we would get some cars in with some nasty front end damage and the air bags had not deployed. We also had some were it would hit right on the sensor and not much damage and it would pop um. Are your seat belts locked up right now, like they wont retract anymore?

Oops. Hope everyone's OK. The impact probably wasn't that fast, so the bags weren't triggered. How fast were you going when you nailed the binders?

I had a friend years ago who owned a Yugo... said he was rear-ended by something going over 50 and walked away. Riiiiiggghhhhhtttt. I suspect that impact was more like 20 or less.

Air bags rarely go off. You have to be approaching highway speed force in order for them to be beneficial. Otherwise they do more harm than good. Unibody structure and seat belts have advanced dramatically within the last 10 years, so they're just not needed as much too.

Plus if you were leaning forward to clean your windshield, it's possible the car thought you were lighter then you are and factored that into the airbag deployment decision.

Its also possible that you should be very glad it did not go off, for the same reason.
If you were leaning forward like that, the airbag could have severely injured or killed you.

Always keep your eyes on the road. So many times have I taken my eyes off the road for a second and when I look back up front a car will magically appear in front of me. Like really, seriously.

What??? ^

I mean, what if this girl was getting out the car after the fact?

I believe its 35+ mph in order for the front airbags to deploy. Its after that speed is achieved the sensors come alive and then it depends on the impact area and the angle of the impact that factors in to whether or not they deploy. At a 23-30 mph impact you are probably lucky they didn't go off since they would have most likey caused you more harm then good, not to mention that would have driven your repair bill up dramatically......

I hit a mountain at like 40 and no bags, you car looks way worse than mine did. Mine ended up costing 21k to fix, yea insurance!

Air bag sensors measure deceleration. Speed and damage are NOT factors of whether or not an air bag should have deployed. Glad to hear you are doing okay.

It's great that you are o.k. and didn't get seriously hurt. Look at it this way, you will remember your 21st. birthday!!

I had a 2000 Audi S4, and was in a similar accident. I was on the highway, and looked down briefly, only to look up again and find a car about 20 feet in front of me, and smashed him. The air bags did not deploy, and the car was pretty seriosuly damaged out front, couldn't even be driven, in fact.

yeah, but being an Audi, you were fine because German cars in general are extremely solid
