Duratech'MZR crate engines from Cosworth. Holy crap:

I'm sure lots of you guys have already seen those, but I just stumbled across them while doing research for my next vehicle (a pre-owned '06 MX-5). Thinking about getting a really high mileage one and pulling a switcheroo with one of the 2.0 versions obviously.

Wonder what would be necessary to do a swap for the 2.3L version I've linked here though (yes into a Mazda5). Wouldn't it be a decently simple switch since it's built from the ground up as an 2.3 MZR? I'm guessing the engine itself would be at least $10k, but how wicked would a 285bhp naturally aspirated 5 be?

Well, if you have to ask...
(hand)
Yes, yes, I know, If you have to ask, then you can't afford it... But it still would be nice to know. Maybe we can get a deal if we do a group buy? I don't need the 285hp one, as I am sure it would not be very streetable.;)

that is badass. ive been wanting some kinda project. am lookin at salvage/wrecks for a speed3/speed6 motor and tranny

I went to their shop and asked few months ago... it is more for Focus not mazda... it should work but you will need a lot more modification to make it work... it is not drop in & turn key...

The engines are start from over $15k

ya its way too expensive. whatever i would use it for would be track only...mmm an 323 awd with this in it would be nice :)

Just the fact that we 5 owners discuss stuff like this... Really is great. I can't imagine a Town & Country, Carava, Odyssey or Sienna owner contemplating this.

I'll stick with a turbo upgrade... and extract a few 3 mods for my 5 vs. a whole new engine. I miss the passing effect of a turbo on the highway. I'm not a big 0-60 guy.

ya something like this for me would be a serious track thing or something really stupid like an old school mini with a motor like the cosworth. either one of them would not be a dd. idk having an oldschool astrovan with a z06 engine could be intresting lol

Wow. Didn't see that this thread has some replies to it. Just want to say I agree with most of you who've chimed in here. Over at a miata forum I read guys talking about the 2.0 versions being about $12,000 USD.

This is a project for someone who buys a 5 even though he(or she) can afford an X5 or an ML. I just dream of having a sleeper 5 that can beat Mustangs and Camaro's. But alas in the end our 5 is a people mover, and I am coming to accept that.

I think the 220 version would be a seriously great addtion to the 5. no turbo lag, I had one turbo and thats all im ever having, turbo sucks for anything other than drag racing...which at 32, I seriously doubt I will ever do. the 220hp version would give nice streetable power, and great driving...
