Corolla XRS

Not at all. The engine has no mid-range punch (look at the max torque), and the handling is going to be nowhere near the MSP.

and it's not like Toyota has any racing division to speak of.

(lol)

I wouldn't say that, they have full time development in Formula 1 right now and TRD. I think toyota has a racing division. This corolla is going to sell well only because of toyota's know quality and it's "peak" hp, that avg joe look at. But yea the torque kind of remind me of another Japanese. engine....honda? Another thing that irks me is that toyota started this scion brand for youth, yet how come they're still making these youth-oriented performance sports compact car for toyota and why not make this corolla xrs as a scion xD? I heard XC is gonna rock though?? mmm...

Aight...my turn...

2001 Toyota Tacoma single cab i4 (2rz-fe engine)
T3/T04e with custom build turbo manifold and intercooler piping.
Spearco FMIC
Apex'i Twin Chamber BOV
Custom mandrel bent pipe, 3" turbo-back exhuast
Apex'i N1 turbo exhaust

Runs high 13's to low 14's in the 1/4....

I got time slips if you want to see, but don't be talkin smack about 'yotas :D I wuv my Taco *pets*

yeah i noticed the low torque as well. I'm sure the MSP could out corner it and out accelerate it as well. It would be interesting to see the 2 race.

I was being sarcastic

TRD, Toyota Racing Development

Toyota is the largest auto manufacturing company in the world. They have major representation in nearly every aspect of racing.

Um, yeah, as Micah said...he was being sarcastic.....

As far as Scion goes, think market share (basically the same reasons the Japanese luxury market exploded here in the 'States in the mid-eighties - OK, it took some time for it to "explode"). The Scion is similar to Saturn for GM (if that's a similar example).

They get to try out different manufacturing techniques, other designs, price-points, etc. without "messing" with the Toyota name directly. When Saturn first came out, lots of people (and I'm sure plenty still don't) know that they are a GM division - but just look at the way they market and sell and produce. Almost all other GMs cars have some mention of GM Financing, etc.....with Saturn, it's "Saturn Financing".

Look for Toyota to do the same with Scion - only, much as Toyota does, it'll make it better.

hard to get sarcasm when it's word typed out on a computer screen, but yea sorry if i was rough on you. You know the funny thing is that in Japan, there's no Lexus, and that Japanese people prefer buying Mercedes and BMW over Lexus there's an article on it at the Tokyo Auto Show about Toyota bringing their Lexus brand home. But back to market share, if they want to capture the youth market share, which is what Scion was supposedly created to do, that goes back to my point of their choice of product lineup. Why they put this model here, when it's squarely aimed at the youth market? And why not maked this model as a Scion model? Also, there's some result out there that says Toyota is becoming like Cadillac = buyer age is getting "large." And it's not hipped like VW is with the youth, hence Toyota's movement to create Scion. So that's why I'm questioning this choice of product lineup.

We know that. The Japanese luxury lines were only developed to increase the respective market share of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan in the North American market. High dollar, high margin cars are what they like and what N/A buyers suck up....that's a rant for a different day (but as a primer: N/A autobuyers pay exhorbitant prices for foreign luxury cars - the markup is insane. Go to Japan or Germany and their respective "luxury" cars may as well be Chevrolets and Dodges....*sigh*)

You have a point about Toyota buyers becoming "older". However, I don't see Toyota complaining too much - Camry's been the #1 selling car for what? the past 10 years (back and forth with Ford's Taurus). However, they also know that some buyers won't buy a Scion, regardless of how "targeted" it is to their demographic and they have to "refresh" their core lineup anyway. The Corolla has been around for, what....15 years? It would be a bad mistake to "rebadge" the Corolla or its replacement and make a Scion.

Every aspect of racing except rally. Back in the 80s, Toyota made awesome cars (that were affordable, I might add). Now.... now they've gone horsepower happy...

"Dude, where's my torque?!"

:D :D :D

Give that sucker about 40-50 lbs/ft more and they'll have a car.

The funny thing is that JDM Sam in his MSP raced a Corolla with a swapped in Celica GT-S engine. Sam walked him by at least 3 cars.... 3-4 times. I saw the whole thing. It was funny. The guy just couldn't accept that the MSP that everyone had ragged on, accually was pretty damn fast! (evil)
