Connected battery cables to the wrong posts

I changed my battery out and wasn’t paying attention and connected the wrong terminals to the wrong posts. The horn was blowing. I disconnected them pretty fast. I read up and everything said a fusible link. Well I changed that which was blown and it still won’t start. What else can I do?

Sorry, but that doesn't sound good...

You probably fried the electronics in the car. Which modules or maybe all modules is hard to say. The best thing to do is ask a specialist (Mazda dealer) to see what is broken.

If all (or most) of the electronics work, you are relatively lucky.
But there is still a chance that some modules are damaged.
With a code scanner you (or the mechanic) can get more information about why the motor doesn't start.

Ok. Well that’s somewhat encouraging. Are there any other fuses that will blow that I can check and does the alarm system or kill switch need to be reset?

The only code I’m getting has to do with the transmission. U0101

I don't know about the CX-9, but my CX-5 has beside a fuse box in the engine compartment also a small one in the cabin. Have you checked all fuses in both boxes?

So forgive my ignorance but do I have to pull each fuse out? I have a meter and they all wrong out and yes I do have it under the hood and in the floor panel on the drivers side

If you measure a voltage over the fuse, it's definitely melted.
If you measure no voltage it still can be melted when the circuit behind the fuse is switched off.
Measuring the resistant is also unsure, because of the possible voltage over the fuse which is interpreted wrong by the meter.
Best is to remove every fuse and measure it. Start with the fuses which are related to the engine modules.

Well not so fast. The vehicle started and drove fine even started it in the morning and it was fine. Went and got coffee came home and parked in the driveway. Went back out to go somewhere and just getting a single click and nothing else. Let sit for a day with nothing connected. Went and got a new battery (the one in it was good as well) put the new battery in and started right up. Put the original battery in and it started as well. Parked and tightened the battery down and now it’s just one single click again with both batteries. What the hell did I do???

Normally i would say your original battery is dead. Letting it sit for a while just let it get enough charge for one start, but it can’t hold charge.

Either that or your alternator is dead. Check the voltage on your battery with car off and with the engine running. If the alternator is working the voltage should be higher when the car is running than when it is off. I am not too sure if there is a fuse between the alternator and the battery, if there is one you could check to see if it is blown.

But it is odd that both batteries are doing the same thing. It is possible the new battery had a very low charge left on it from the store. Or it is something else.

If alternator and batteries are good then it could be the starter.

Also what year is your CX-9 ? It could also be a stuck brake interlock cable in the transmission shifter. When they get stuck the car doesn’t know it is in park and won’t start. If that is the case sometimes going to neutral will allow to start the car.

Oh wow. That’s different. It’s a 2021 Carbon edition. This has got me so stressed. I checked the batteries and one was 12.81 and the other is 12.70 and from what I’ve read they are both good. So if I am able to get it to start if I put the meter on the battery it should be lower than that?

With the engine running voltage should be higher. More in the 14 volt range.

If the car is a 2021 then it probably isn’t the brake interlock cable. That usually happens when cars are a lot older.

The other thing i could think off is if there is an issue with keyfob detection and antitheft, but i dont know how to diagnose that.

Make sure your grounds are secure.
