Cobb AP Discussion Thread

Installed my corksport race pipe and catback. Thing sounds MEAN! I also reflashed it to stage 2. Now I just have to get my driver's license issues sorted out... :(

Reflashed to Stage 2 93 v 101 this morning, put 135 miles on today and the damn thing is still learning. WTF

I babied it all day.

This is what Travis at Cobb says about learning maps.

There is a lot of talk about the car "learning" and taking it easy, but we run these cars HARD on the dyno without 50 miles of learning time. In fact, after most tunes we will put the dyno into simulation mode and do WOT pulls in 3rd-5th gear to see how the car behaves.

Somewhere along the line this belief in breaking in everything surfaced and now people take it easy for the first 50 miles after they change thier oil. Hell, the first thing I do when installing a new part is to flog the car.

When we tune a car we are really worried about high-rpm high-load conditions since this is when the engine is at it's most energetic. You can't really knock your engine apart at low load, so while there might be slight hiccups in idle and low load operation they generally arent detrimental to engine operation.

To sum up, drive it hard (in a safe and legal manner of course) and perhaps capture a log here and there to make sure she is still running tip-top.

When I flashed it the first time I flogged it, and the flash took after 40ish or so miles. This time I've got 150+ miles on it and it's still learning. I usually can't help myself after an install but to beat on her a little bit.(humpleg)

I'll whomp on it some more tomorrow.

I think I'd rather have launch control myself, but who knows. I'd also like to see more 93 maps, and some tuning for the inlets that everyone seems to have now, so that would be great. And, one last request, would be to try and completely eliminate the part throttle knock that some of us have experienced. Looking at other forums, it's a more common problem than you think.

part throttle knock may be a common problem but its not a problem in the sense that it is damaging. in low load situations you will not experience any damage. many from cobb have stated this. and it may not even be knock, they simply said thats what they chose to name that table, they could have called it timing change. i for the most part have done a good deal to tune my partial throttle "knock" down to where i only get the occasional .35 or .7 and a 1-3 ever less frequently.

as for tuning for all the different parts, i don't really blame cobb for not doing this because there are so many different combination's they can't really cater to everyone. i dont think much tuning is needed for the turbo inlet either.

The PT knock isn't something that I'm overly concerned about damaging the engine, but it will affect acceleration when it starts flaring up (at least in my case). It seems that with a little work in ATR (which I still need to read up more about) you can cure it yourself, but I'd like to see a little more refinement from Cobb, or at least some more direction on how to reduce/eliminate it on your own.

Why is it that all the maps say for stock intake on the AP? Isn't that like the first thing people do?

I think they want people to be able to use the AP right out of the box, so the stock intake might be there. Otherwise, I totally agree with you.

I think I'll wait for the new maps to come out and see what they've got, then probably read up on calibrating the MAF, and then make minor tweaks to the system and go from there. I'm sure with enough time and research you can tune your own map safely. Key being, change one table at a time, record your changes and results, and do thorough testing with it.

We may have to put our heads together on this one. You can read through a specification by yourself and interpret something completely different than the next person. Specs are guidelines and should be discussed among the community until properly understood. I have read through them and don't understand to my comfort level nearly as much as I should to feel confident in my ability to tune a map.

I'm all for that. First thing that we need to set up and do is the MAF calibration. That will only make the maps more suited to your local environment. After that, trying to optimize maps will be the next step. I'm sure others out there have done this/are doing this, but the more we get on here, the better we'll be.

Guess I should download ATR just to have it. I bet on the next round of updates they do they'll be ready to pull it.

They won't take ATR away from the public. Although its a beta, it's important to them to have that available to us, especially since they're not going to put too much of their resources into the MS platform in the future.

Guess everyone wants to suck up to the Evo and STI market.(bird)

LOL. Cobb is a solid company, I've not had any complaints with their products or customer service. Also, their resources on their forum for the AP are good, and you can usually get a respectable answer out of them pretty quickly.

I'm not mad at them. I just thought the post was funny. Honestly their bread is buttered better elsewhere I'm sure.

I've got no complaints, and when I've called or talked to them they have always been good to deal with.

I was just busting on Evo and STI bitches as well. (killit)
