Cobalt SS/TC vs Mazdaspeed3

i'm not sure if this is true or not but there's a guy at my work with a SS/TC (forget what year) and he told me that the ECU in them can learn around mods and actually will NOT give a power increase without some type of EMS. is this true? if so, that kinda sucks for them.

its true, but the factory stage kits disable that feature as well as almost every tune available.

fanbois are soooo sad

Who here's a "fanboi" and why? Just because someone doesn't drool over a 2900lbs FWD car with 260hp/5-speed manual that runs close to the same times a MS3 which is heavier, doesn’t have LC, no lift shift, and no 5-speed manual optimized for 0-60/ 1/4 mile runs doesn't make someone a "fanboi". Not everyone finds the Cobalt SS impressive all things considered and this doesn’t make someone a “fanboi”. There are plenty of cars out there obviously a lot faster/ better than the MS3 but the Cobalt SS isn't one of them. It might be a couple tenths quicker in the 1/4 stock but when you consider all the built in tech and low weight it's not very impressive and still looks like a steaming pile inside/out.

I was talking with an SSt owner and he said they've only been able to unlock 3 of the 600 or so fuel tables. Seems like they top out at just over 400 WHP. I'm not convinced they've been able to crack the ECU (yet).

and about the MS3 guys having a bad rep. just look back a few months to when Cobb flipped out on the MS3 community.

In all fairness I don't see it as much here as I do on other MS3 forums. I think it's due to the fact this car attracts a lot of younger buyers who could care less what they spew over the keyboard, lol.

yeah this forum isnt as bad as another i can think of. i think its how kids act with thier first decently quick car.

The reason cars like the MS3 get a bad rep is because it's cheap speed. You get kids 16-17yrs old living with mom /dad and having them buy the car for them because it's only 23k. Or maybe the parents don’t buy the car but the 16-17yr old can actually afford it because they live at home, no rent. 5.5 sec’s to sixty is too fast for most kids this age

Form>Function

The cobalt took the place of the neon SRT-4, sure its fast but nobody likes them.

I think a lot of people like both of them. I'd hate to think all those people I see driving them hate their cars.

It's one thing to express your opinion that you don't like a car, but to call it a "steaming pile" is equally as offensive and rude as calling someone a fan boi, ricer, etc....

I am not going to get into it either way.......

My friend just uploaded this video taken with his iphone. I had no idea he video taped it! I had no idea it was a TURBO I was messing with until I saw his 13.56 stock world record on You Tube last night! This car totally slept on me. We were going to the track last Wednesday, and I thought this Cobalt was a 2.4l N/A, because it is cherry red and has the sleeper wing.

My friend in the 2008 Si Coupe (Injen Short Ram, Cobb AP Stage 2, Ingalls Stiffy TQ damper, Vibrant Catted Header & Header Back Exhaust) didn't tell me he videotaped me and the Cobalt SS messing around until today. You can see in the video, I got next to him, dropped it into fourth, then did a quick punch of the gas in order to get his attention. This is when he took off. I hit the gas as soon as I saw him going, and when I thought I might be catching him he was already breaking.

So, as crazy as this sounds- I think I got smoked by an SS/TC without even knowing it!!! I thought It was just a SS/SC that was hooked up, and I thought he just got a big jump!! I waved to the guy after he was cool. He pulled into Cecil Dragway, but was not racing. -It's obvious why, he has the world record for a stock Cobalt, and now runs 13.4x.

It wasn't until I found his video on You Tube, and I also found him on the Cobalt forum today. He has a drop in K&N, and a HPTuner Tune I believe. I will be e-mailing him to confirm this. My mods are in my sig.

Premium Gasoline,

Why is saying a Cobalt ss looks like "a steaming pile" inside and out offensive to you? You work for GM? (Government Motors)

You provoke a question but you're "not going to get into it either way"? Lol okay so you made that statement for +1's and for people to jump on your bandwagon, got it!

how come i never see any of you ppl when im out? haha

You should come to Cecil County Dragway with us. Have you been there? It's a good time, close enough for me to come down from PA. Are you at University of Delaware? If so It should be very close to you. In the summer there are some crazy cars there. This past Wed. there was a new CTS-V white that ran 11.8x, a nice Supra, and a couple new Z06s to give you an idea. Test and Tune is Wed. evening, and Street Grudge Match Fri. evening.

Well i can definitely say this, the Cobalt SS/TC SURPRISED ME! My buddy mike had just gotten one right about the time i finished the BPT swap on my Escort GT.

My EGT did 200whp, 225wtq, weighed 2300lbs, and we got in ~ 8-10 40mph 2nd gear pulls... All with the same result.

Dead even all the way to about 145mph. My EGT would pull a fender ahead, SSTC closed the gap.

Shift, EGT up, Cobalt close the gap, every run! I'm not a GM fan at all, but I give them props for this one! 5 different Cobalt SS/SCs would be 4 cars+ behind me, so its a hell of an improvement w/ the turbo!

Now when i ran an MS3, which had TBE and a BOV on 19psi i stayed on his back bumper but started creepin by top of 4th bottom of 5th.
