clunking in front suspension

I know that my passenger side strut is leaking fluid. I have Koni yellows on order in a group buy. In the meantime, the noise while I am driving is almost unbearable. It seems like the clunking comes mostly from the DRIVER's side front suspension, maybe spring, maybe strut - none of which are blown, to my knowledge. Every little ripple in the road results in loud clunking which sounds like plastic flapping in the wind.
After Walmart replaced the under-engine splash shield which they lost ($200), I thought the plastic flapping sound would go away. It did ... mostly. But now several thousand miles later, the clunking/flapping noise is worse. It is VERY bad and almost constant at 65 mph, but I notice it at lower speeds over the smallest bumps. Could the strut tower bolts need tightening or the strut mounts generally need replacement (at 70K miles)?
