Clunk Updates

I think for a P5, the best thing would be to take it in. It could be something totally unrelated. The suspension components except for the endlinks, are totally different (struts, springs, swaybar, bushings) on the P5 vs the MP3/MSP.

It does seem like the same type of sound though... not a squeak, doesn't seem tied to anything else (braking, taking off, turning, etc.) It just happens over bumps and is slowly getting worse. It's not just in the front, but I also hear it from the rear as well.

This is the first thing I will have to take my car to the dealer for. It's been perfect otherwise. Great car.

HI Mike!

Welcome to the club :)

I agree with doomer. Get it to the dealer. There have been only a few p5's who "claim" to have a clunk noise. I'm not convinced it's the same problem. You never know though. You could have a bad strut as well. I know there was a problem with the strut, near the top, it comes loose. This was on the p5's and ES. Mazda Canada actually thought this might have been the problem with the mp3 first, but it was not

I got new bushings put in at the begining of January. And here in NYC we got a huge snow storm and it was bitterly cold. No clunks or anything. I think they replaced them with the E-bushings(dont have the recipt with me). And thank god it was under warranty, purchased the extended when I bought the MP3 new.

I have had them fixed twice before and the clunk came back. Had the fix done in the summer both times, and then the clunk came back in the winter once it got brick a$$ cold here in NYC. Now had them fixed in January before a huge snow storm and below freezing weather= nothing so far. BUT only time will tell and the spring is around the corner.

Trust me...It will come back..... It always comes back unless you get the Delson clunk fix...(no)

knock on wood, but 20, 000+ kms, and 1 yr +3-4 months for my E's.

Anyone with a MSP having the E's fail as well?

Anyway, quick review for me...
Is there a TSB out for this? It's number?
Whats the best fix so far?
What parts will they be putting in? Their numbers?

i've just purchased a mp3 and it has the typical bushing clunk issues. the car has 42k miles on it so i'm guessing i'm out of the warranty period. does anyone know if mazda will still replace the bushings under 'warranty' since there was a tsb out on them?

Soon as the weather got cold here, the clunk was back with a vengeance. Haven't gone in to have them replaced yet. Figured that I would wait until warmer weather.

Its a TSB problem, so from what I've heard around here, the bushings are covered indefinetly...I may be wrong though. Anyone?

I had mine done once by the dealer after the warranty was up. I had a hell of a time getting them to do it for no cost but they finally did. However, they said it was the last time they would do it under warranty.

I just got my E's replaced for the 2nd time yesterday.
So I had my original set of D's, this is my 3rd set of E's.
42,000 kilometres on the dial in 2 years.

I replaced my Bushings with the greasable type from Energy suspension. All you have to do is bend the brackets to match the stock brackets. I havent heard a squeak in 10000 miles. I would suggest this swap to everyone, it is about 16-20 dollars and you will never have to deal with them again other than the occasional greasing.
Just my 2 cents

nukem, this has been discussed before, the grease just hides the noise, but your bushings are still not working and your handling suffers because of it. At least, that's what others have experienced using the energy ones.

Guess I'm just lucky with mine so far. If it means anything to anyone, my E bushings were not put on at my dealer. they didn't have the right kind of lift....not sure what that means. they went to another garage where they installed them

It is possible with those that are failing, that your dealers are not installing them correctly. Yes, that sounds crazy, but it's true.

Why would it work for some and not for others? My bar and bushings were replaced 22000kms, 1 yr 4 months ago. so far so good.

I still drive around paranoid as hell about it though. I'm betting that one day, it will come back. I just hope someone else owns the car by then
