Greetings,
Just purchased my first Mazda and so far, I am very pleased. At the moment there is a single noise, that doesn't seem (yet!) to be linked to any wear in the engine.
2003 2.0L inline-4 Engine 5-speed manual, refurbished engine installed @ 22k with additional 13k put on. Engine mileage is roughly 35k.
While in any gear, there is a spinning rattle, almost like the sound of a playing card in bike spokes, akin to the sound of something spinning up. The sound is most noticed while starting at a lower gear @ smaller RPMs.
For example, noise is very noticeable when accelerating in 1st gear, and at lower speeds in 2nd and 3rd. However, once in 4th/5th gear, there is almost a sweet spot when accelerating. If I let off the pedal, the noise stops, then when I press the pedal again, the spinning noise starts and will cease if I continue accelerating. Either the noise is stopping through acceleration or something is "spinning" up fast enough at higher speeds and the rotation is too fast to register a sound.
Either way, it seems to only happen when actively accelerating and is definitely coming from the driver side of the engine compartment. When traveling at high speeds and then pulling out of gear to just coast, the noise will also cease.
I am in the process of finding a manual so I have better tools to diagnose with. In the meantime, if anyone has had or heard of this before, please let me know.
Thanks much!
