Check engine light on

Hi guys:

So I just got my speed3 with 9k on it. I just recently put in my first tank of gas 91 from 76. Right after I started the car and I noticed the check engine light on. I know that I'll need to do an oil change for this car when it reaches 11k, so I shouldn't have the check engine yet.

Later in the day, I started the car again and the check engine is gone. Then today it's on again. What gives?

The only mod I have on the car Engine wise is APC intake and a BOV.

How do I take the light off?

Check engine light has nothing to do with oil change. Take it somewhere and get it scanned to figure out what the code means. It could be as simple as the gas cap wasn't tight. If you have Autozone in your area I think they will do it for free.

oh sweet! thank Rotus! I hope it's just the gap cap =p I really hate to have to take the car to the dealership since i have intake and BOV and I dont' know if they'll void my warranty

it happened after you got gas??if this is the case then did you leave the gas cap loose, i mean even a little loose cause if that happens then you probly threw a EVAP code...

damn...you serious?

let me go tighten it later..

the thing is the light comes in and out.

ok, after checking for the gap cap, the engine ligh is still on. Would it have anything to do with my apc intake? The intake's been on the car for quite a while though...damn...what gives?

if you tightened it up then its not gonna go away , well sometimes it might after a little while, but just go to autozone and get them to run the code if its the small evap leak code then erase it b/c that was because of the gas cap other than that i would still go to autozone and run the code before you bring it to the dealer b/c i dont want it to be on you because of your intake , which i seriously dought it has anything to do with your intake. but i would still run the code with the scanner at autozone it will take like two seconds, just to be on the safe side

Get . It . Scanned.

When you know what the code is, you will be able to decide what to do next.

yeah the intake I got when I bought the car. came off a wrx or something it's a short ram.

I went to kargen and they had the scanner but they didn't have a loaner one. I can buy one for like 100 bucks but I am not sure it's worth it unless I need to use it all the time. So Autozone is the one that I can get a loaner or scan it for free?

yea you can go to autozone for a loaner one for sure

cool. I'll go their at lunch today and find out. So if it's really the gas cap, then what the heck am I suppose to do? open it, clean it and put it back

if it was the gas cap just tighten it down like you normally would and let it click like 2 or 3 times , go to autozone get them to scan it and if its the small evap leak delete the code and if you get like some vacuum leak code then check your intake. Are you getting any hesitation or rough idle or more backfire then normal???

First off, that intake was not made specifically for an MS3. If you ask me, I would not have just put any intake on this beautiful car of ours. But hey, to each his own. Check the MAF wiring harness and make sure they have slack so when you do punch it or have some fun it has enough to move with the engine.

Gas cap not on tight enough? If the cap isn't secure it will throw a CEL. But it sounds like you covered that. Intake would be next on the list.
