Check engine light and loose gas cap

A few months back the 'Check Engine' light went on. Had a nightmare experience dealing with a Mazda dealer in Thomaston, CT. Basically wasted my time replacing a couple of things, had me waiting at the dealer for a couple of hours after they told me it would be ready, only to then find out that they still couldn't get the light to go out and they needed to close for the day (and a long Holiday weekend). I ended up bringing it to the Hartford, CT Mazda dealer next and they informed me that the brand new oxygen sensor that the Thomaston dealer used was apparently defective. They replaced it and the light went out.

Flash forward a few months. Light goes on again. I popped the fuel door and discovered that the fuel cap was on very, very loose. I thought, great, hopefully this is all it is. So I tightened it up. Well, I drove it around for several days afterwards and the light never went out on its own.

So, my question: Does anyone have any experience with the CEL going on because of a loose fuel cap and, if so, should the light go out on its own or would I need to bring it in for someone to turn off the light? The Hartford dealer is a bit of a haul for me, so I hate to bring it in if I don't have to.

My assumption is that the light should go out on its own and, since it didn't, there's some other issue.

The CEL will after xx number of restarts go out on its own. I forgot the number but, 10 or 12 seems to come to mind. Ed
