Cheap Sounding Doors

My wife has a CX-7 with about 3,000 miles on it. We both love the way the car rides handles etc. The only thing that bothers me is the sound of the doors when slamming them. I dont know if they are too light or what but you just dont get that solid thud you get with other cars. My sister in law just bought a CR-V and the doors sound very solid when closing them. Anyone who has ever owned German cars will know what Im referring too. Is it just me or do any of you notice the same thing? Considering how solid the car is otherwise(no Squeeks rattles etc.).

doors sounds good, they dont have the sound of an Audi/VW - but what does? also hate the vw/audi doors they feel so stiff and fight being open and shut like something is wrong with them.

the windows def close with a thunk.

My windows also close with that solid thunk. I should add when you close the tailgate it sounds very solid. I think it just may be that the doors are very light. I know Mazda was trying to keep weight down on the CX-7 and this may have been one area they trimmed. I had a Mazda 3 loaner for a day(06 with 15,000 miles) and it sounded like the door was going to fall off when I closed it. I drive a Jetta so I may be used to the heavier doors the Germans tend to use. However a Mazda 6 I looked at in the showroom seemed more solid.

My only complaint is they seem creaky or a little off or something when I open them....otherwise they seem fine...I prefer a lighter door anyway. One way Mazda keeps the weight down....we don't need big heavy doors anyway.....better for gas mileage and zoom zoom factor!!

The doors sound that way because when Mazda designed the CX-7, they were trying to reduce weight-- generally when autmotive engineers are trying to reduce weight (either in an effort to increase performance or fuel efficiency), the frame and the body paneling are the first things to be modified so as to shed weight. Look at any eco-friendly vehicle-- all of their doors sound that way. Vehicles that give off a solid sound when you close the door have slightly heavier doors and paneling.

My only complaint is that the rear doors like to swing closed even when they're propped open and then front doors love to swing violently all the way open even with minimal force (even a light breeze flings the front doors all the way open).

I agree, they are very light and cheap sounding/feeling. The weight reduction makes sense, especially after they made the design decision to use the 4-cylinder.

However, there is NO excuse for the creaky doors, and I'm disturbed that they haven't issued a service bulletin for them. Grrrrr.

never had any creeky doors, do they creek while driving or just when opening/closing. if its just when opening or closing, i really dont see a big deal with that . . ?

I agree, they feel light and do not close with the germanic authoritative "thwump." But, I also agree with others it's not "cheapness", it's lightness. My '02 Protege is still nearly squeak and rattle free, and we've driven the bojangles out of that car. It's doors also feel light and "hollow." Hopefully the CX-7 has the same long-term tightness.

I agree "Cheap" may not be the best word for it. The hinges they use on the doors leaves room for major improvement as well. Very flimsy, have a grinding sound when opening and closing and the doors swing open easily. Look at a hinge on a Jetta. It must weight about 2 pounds while the hinge on the CX-7 probably weights 3 ounces. Although in just about every other performance aspect the CX-7 outshines my car. And the CX-7 rides very solid. I guess there is always trade offs and if they put higher quality materials it would be priced like an RX 350.

My doors are "creaking" already, which is very new to me on new cars. I buy a LOT of new cars and this is the first that has creaked with being only 3 months old. Every spring I silicone my door handles and systems - but 3 months creaking already?

Hello?

They might not sound as solid as a German car but they sound way more solid than the doors on my Nissan Murano that I traded for my CX. Those were some sorry sounding doors.

tes

No complaints here on the doors though I'm not sure they are as solid as my VW. I test drove a CRV and thought those were tinny so go figure.

door sounds is NOT indicative of vehicle quality... sadly, that's what half the people out there do when car shopping... they listen for the door sounds

o yea. this should be filed under car quality myths

You're right, but it's very satisfying to feel a nice solid door closing.

Both points my wife and I noticed:

1) doors light and sound toyish - no oomph.
2) doors creak and open on the hinge with real subtle grind, like opening w/hinge dusted w/sand. I sprayed white grease on, no real change.

Lol What the hell do people want a heavy door? the car is already overweight damn theres a complaint with just about everything. I should start a complaint on the way the clips and hardware were made, holy crap (sick)

I guess it's what makes us all different. My doors are fine after 4 months and 4,000 miles.
