Cheap Ebay shifters...

You'll get all kindsa responses to this. But, I think it is fine. I am glad I spent what I did on my full TWM setup cause it's teh sex and I am paying for the name

If you just want a short shifter, grab it and pickup some shift bushings and you'll have near the exact same feel as I do for 1/3 the price of the full setup

ya I also got a ebay one with stock bushings and s*** is good to me, much more solid feel than that spongey stock one..go for it.

raserx- did you buy it or install it. I would like to know how these shifters are.

u get what u pay for... i just bought TWM and its the bombshit. its worth the 200 i spent ( SS + bushings + boot) and getting a Genuine Weighted Mazdaspeed knob :D

ya did both and I really like it, feels real solid and its smooth, I mean they say you get what you pay for but its damn good to me I dont see anything else it could improve on, I used to have a good name brand one on my old car and to me its just like the same thing but half the price..it could just be me tho but ya Id get one..even tho it doesnt seem to be the "cool" thing to do.

I put in the cheap ebay shifter, similar to the OP's link, tonight. Did anybody else who has done this find that the snap ring could not be refitted? The aluminum shifter housing on the new part sticks out above the top of the black shifter base. The thing stays put reasonably well, but pulling up on the shifter would make the housing come out. It doesn't seem right, really. I may try to secure it with wire- not sure if there is much to wire to, though.

I drove it as is. It's nice to have shorter throws, but it's a little heavy/notchy now, of course...

You don't reuse anything after with the ebay ones. You can toss the o rings and small boot things. You just push the shifter into place (push hard). The o-rings are on that movable piece already.

you probably got the same one I did. If you look on the housing with the o-rings you'll see a small lip that protrudes. This keeps the bushing housing from sliding all the way down. You need to take a dremel and grind of that ridge. Once you do that you can drop it down further and use the snap ring to hold it in place. I shot some lithium grease down there just for good measure. It's not a super tight fit but does the trick. Make sure you bend the heatshield down to avoid hitting the shifter and put some locktite on the bottom nut or it'll get loose over time.

I have KB bushings and the ebay shifter and it does the job for me. I just can't see spending 4x more for a marginally tighter fit. It's a shift lever and I'm not a label *****.

You don't have to grind that down. You just have to push really really hard. The small lip and o-ring are there for a reason. To stop water and stuff from getting in and to keep it in place.

Putting some grease in around the edge helps a lot also.

the lip was too largeon mine. It was the same size as the diameter of the tube it goes down into. The o-rings are still there to keep water out as is the rubber boot at the bottom. Just be sure to double check that the boot is installed correctly so that it mates up and keeps water out. I'll probably reinstall sometime in the future as I had the little metal ring in there upside down so the boot doesn't seal perfectly. There's hardly ever rin here so no worries.

I put the boot on the bottom. Yes, on mine the outer diameter of the main part of the new shifter's housing is about the same size as the black piece that is part of the car. The lip rides on the top of the housing. (As I recall anyway- I'd better take another look at it!) I was thinking I may be able to do something with a hose clamp to hold it all together more positively.
