Changing your transmission fluid?

Thanks to the board, I had a successful first ever oil change! No more Jiffy Lube! Now I'm thinking about changing my transmission fluid to a higher quality fluid. Anyone care to detail the proper steps for changing the tranny fluid on the Mazdaspeed? Also, how frequently does the fluid need to be changed? Thanks!!

Well, I plan on changing mine about once a year. I had it changed to Royal Purple 75w-90 a few weeks after I bought it.

Changing it yourself is just like an oil change, except no filter. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the tranny, drain the old grease out, put the plug back in, find the fill plug somewhere about half way up on the side of the tranny case, and squirt the new grease in until it starts to run out the fill hole, then screw the fill plug back in.

It'll help if the transmission is warmed up some before trying to drain 90 weight grease.

It is relly easy to do, probally easier than doing the oil (b/c location oof our filters.

i have redline MT-90 it really smooths things out.

you will need a pump to get the fluid into the fill port, or a long funnel from the top. very simple.

Some additional information. The drain and fill plugs take a 23 mm socket. Make sure you replace the sealing washers on the two plugs (part no. 9956-41-800) and the FSM specifies the tightening torque of both plugs as 29-43 ft/lbs. (40-58 N-m).

A dealer change should be around $75.

No one has listed how many quarts it takes... Anyone know the capacity?

If someone on this board has drained the transmission fluid, how many quarts did you need to refill it? Just 1... maybe 2? Was there any leftover... or did you need to open a 3rd quart?

The car's still up on ramps and I can't get this info from a search. Maybe it's in the manual somewhere and I missed it... just thought I'd give it one more shot here.

Three quarts plus a little bit of a fourth for Redline MT-90 in mine. I didn't replace the copper sealing gaskets and I'm fine, no leaks.

i am wanting to put gm syncromesh in mine. anyone else put it in. i hear it is probably the best on the market right now. cost?
