Cel came on after exhaust install

:
Mazda, Speed 2003.5
I purchased a corksport exhaust for my 03.5 msp. I helped my mechanic put it on but i guess he cracked the sensor when removing it from the stock exhaust. My cel light came on a couple days later. After taking it to mazda and paying 80.00 for nothing just labor to diagnose the problem the mechanic told me the o2 sensor was cracked. He told me that all i needed was some type of resistor that tricked the computer in keeping the cel off. He advised me that i shouldn't purchase a new o2 sensor because it would prolly burn out with it so close to the down pipe in a matter of weeks. What type of resitor would i need for that, and where would i find one? My dad says he has one that he purchased for his turbo beetle and never used. Would that work? Also, where would this be installed? Would i be required to sodder (sp) it in before the o2 sensor? If anyone can shine some light on this for me it would be great. Thanks in advance.

You can go here and get the MIL eliminator. Or go to radioshack and make one. There is also the spark plug non-fouler that cost like 2 bucks from the parts store. It should be around here somewhere.

whats a spark plug non-fouler do?

It creates a pocket of air so the sensor works, but doesn't see as much bad stuff so no CEL. Read about it in this thread.

What your mechanic is talkign about is an MIL Eliminator. I'm not sure if this would work with a broken O2 sensor. I would recommend getting a new OEM one (or a replacement) and using the Non-fouler method to prevent future CELs.

JDM Sam can hook you up with aftermarket O2 sensors which were like 1/2 the price of a new one. He can also hook you up with the predrilled non foulers so all you'd have to do is connect the old wires to your new sensor and screw everything into your O2 bung on your exhaust.

Either way you are going to have to do some soldering. Either soldering the wire to a new O2 sensor, or soldering the MIL eliminator into the existing O2 sensor.

This is what the non-fouler set up looks like. I had to weld one non fouler in cuz I stripped out my 02 bung threads. Don't ask. But this was 5.99 at Checker and took very little time. The only extensive process was drilling out the fouler that the o2 sensor goes into with a 1/2 inch drill bit. I also have the corksport exhaust and I love it.

u buy 2 from autozone. part number 42002 (i think) red package by the company "help"
drill one of them out so the o2 will screw in all the way.
put the drilled one on the 02 sensor, then the other one screws onto that fouler, then they both screw onto the downpipe and you will have no cel light.
I tired it with one and the cel light came on. I put 2 on and the cel light went off after 1 day.

thanks so much for explaining that. I will try to get two of those soon. I have an mil eliminator. Would you recommend trying that? or going with the non fouler?

well the non fouler will cost you a grand total of $5 and 5min of time to install and drill out.
i have no idea how much u paid for the mil kit.
i've never done the mil before and this was the first time i've used the fouler thing.
it's up to u

i will try that first. The o2 sensor should just unscrew and i'll plug the new drilled out non fouler into it and the plug it back into the o2 bung. is it that simple?

well i tried the spark plug non fouler method and had no luck. Then i tried the mil eliminator method and had no luch. After i reset the the car with the negative terminal removal the light stays off for about an hour of driving. After that it comes on. Do ya think i need the new o2 sensor? thanks

yeah used them both. I guess my o2 sensor is broken for sure because i used both non foulers and the mil eliminator. so i guess i'll have to get a new o2 sensor

ouch that sucks. sorry man.
maybe u can get a universal one and just wire to your existing wires? i really dont know just throwing out some ideas
