Well this will be a worth while mod regardless. There was some oil in my intake manifold, however this has not solved my smoking issue. When driving I still dont smoke, just at idle after 30 seconds or so. I am going to throw my 2nd cat back on tonight to see what happens. If it masks it I wouldnt be totally upset.....I am taking it in to the dealership once I remove my MBC.

it could still be some left over oil in the system that may take some time to work its way out. the second cat would almost definitely help it until the left over oil works its way out. or its possible that you have another issue with the turbo seals

What oil are you guys using that are having smoke issues? Don't know if this is common knowledge or not but does everyone know that Mazda does not recommend ANY synthetic oil for the turbo motors because it leaks by the seals to easily?

I thought that was interesting but I have had no issues yet and I run the 0-40 Mobil1.

so you installed this between the manifold and PCV valve? Did you do a check valve as well?? Are you sure that the catch can hose isnt collapsing under boost?

Also you want to make sure that there is some kind of filtering material/baffling in the can to make sure that no oil is leaking the other side.

Also, our cars run rich, so that may be the cause of some of the smoke. So-- catch can+tune may equal no more smoke.

Im relatively sure that if you arent smoking under throttle/boost, its not the turbo seals.

As ar as I know the only motor Mazda will not put Synthetic in is the RX8. Both of my oil changes I have brought in PP 5w-30 Full Syn and they have no problem putting that in.

About the catch can. Is that where you HAVE to mount it? I have thought about this mod for a while but I have the MS CAI and if your picture doesn't lie, I dont see much room for installation with the lower pipe being in the way.

Isn't the smoking issue caused by bad/blown turbo seals...most likely leaking into the exhaust side, in which case a catch can will have no effect.

I checked the hoses under boost and they dont collapse. I am not running synthetic oil and havent since I bought the car. The car is going into the dealership on Friday so hopefully they will just fix it right there. I am not taking off my parts because they arent the issue and the dealership already knows about them, wish me luck!

I dont know where else you could install this. The whole engine bay is pretty tight. Possibly on the passanger side but there are a ton of hoses over there.

That looks very professional. Sorry about smoke. I installed Corksport Turbo back and nothing but fuel smoke so the no cat oil smoke theory doesn't apply. And I do have a bit of oil residue at intercooler. My seals are fine so far.

you better take off your mbc or you will be sorry..Unless you dont care about your warranty.

Smoking only on idle is not from blown seals.

MS6 owners have gotten rid of the smoking issue with a good catch can.

The MS3 also runs excessively rich with stock tuning which will also contibute to smoking and soot.

how long have you been running with the can on?

Other than emissions, is there any reason not to plug the manifold hole and vent the line out of the catch can to atmosphere?

I installed a catch tank and I noticed that the hoses collapsed. I didn't check if it happens under boost. Is this OK, if not how do I fix the problem?

Due the the vacuum properties yes your hoses will collapse at idle. Under boost they will expand, no worries there, your good!

Okay so i missed a day at the MS3 forum school..........and a bunch at every other school, so what does a catch can do and why does it relieve smoking issues?
