Can't throw 1st to 2nd fast... (no bang)

I cannot throw the 1-2 shift quickly... there's like a 1/4 to 1/2 second delay in this shift only. I brought it to the dealer last year, and I made him drive it and try to throw it fast into second. He agreed there was an issue, but said they would charge me if the synchros were fine.
He's lied about a ton of stuff before (clutch TSB not existing, etc..)

Does anyone know if there is a TSB out there concerning 2nd gear? I can whip through the other ones np, but 1-2 gives me s***. It's like it gets hung up on something. Almost like the shift plate has a notch in it on the left side, but it happens with a "straight" throw too.

Please help quick, I swapped my TIP + SF out today back to stock for a dealer visit in the am (a different dealer), and I swear I read of someone getting work done under a TSB, but I'm not sure. I've been searching, but come up short.

Thanks for the help! Sorry for last minute post.. dealer appt in 11hrs

twm shortshifter and shifter bushings also will help!

Thanks bova80! Do you know off-hand about how much those parts will run? I gotta leave in about a half hour here. Wish me luck... I have like 4 TSB's I want them to check out (a couple have to do with fuel cut, which are my main concern)... they're gonna love me!!! LOL

there is nothing wrong with shifting over 5500rpm. the fall off point for the throttle plate pre-AP flash is 5800rpms.

you can either hit me or ken up at PG. i'll send you a PM.

Thanks again bova!

twm ftw, im sure ken can get u a good deal on the parts needed. good luck today dougefresh

Thanks, the new dealership is great... the guy is really cool, helpful, and happy to address issues- very refreshing. I'm waiting for car now.
He couldn't believe the other dealer wanted to charge me for looking at sychros. He's also checking out other TSB for the 06 dealing with rough idle (haven't really noticed it, but don't want to run lean with AP... better safe than boom), as well as control arms TSB. He also shook his head that the old place set my alignment to the 'wagon' when they did the clutch TSB.

2nd gear won't throw fast at any rpm.

Thanks again for all your great input guys... it's very much appreciated!! I wish I could offer some knowledge in return, but I'm only about 1/4 way up the learning curve here. I can tell you all you need to know about auditing as I just sat for that part of the cpa exam on Monday. However, I highly doubt anyone wants to hear about that! LOL

I get that hung up feeling also, but only if I take 1st above like 4k rpm and try to shift. I don't do it often so it hasn't really bothered me. I'd be interested in hearing any solutions or remedies you guys come up with though.

for 1st gear it is always good to do 5500 because without the AP i find first gear has a tendency to over rev anyway by 100-200, making it harder to shift into 2nd. this isnt need for speed where you have green perfect shifts if you time it lol, i feel the shifts are different every single time no matter how much attention you pay to it. everything else i shifted 5800. now i shift at 6400 :D

+1

Thanks again guys. I ordered the TWM Stage II sts w/ bushings, as well as some Redline gear oil & tranny fluid. That should do the trick. The fluid is on back order though, so I'm waiting for my order to be ready to ship (pissed)

hey let me know how it goes, i have the same issue with 1st to 2nd gear shifting. Same exact way you described it to and i've thought about taking it to the dealership and having them check synchros but i dont know if they'll do it under warranty. Anyways let me know if you are able to fix this and what u did

hey, kind of off topic, but what dealership do you go to? I live just outside of boston and am having some problems with my ms6- it is at the dealer right now and might turn out to be a disaster.. Definitely would like to know of a good dealer that knows the issues and is more willing to check into everything. I have had mine at the dealer a few times with the same complaints and nothing has been done.

slamming the shifter into gear as fast as you can mad tyte fast & furious style = DUMB

this is abuse and hope you have good luck that you don't break your tranny!

I dont think he's slamming it but what he's saying is 1-2 is hard to get into and makes a clunk and you cant shift into 2nd quick enough to drive the car smoothly.

The dealer told me months ago that if it wasn't the synchros, then I'd be charged for several hours of labor! I had brought it in to two different dealers, they both said "It seemed fine" and so I made them come for a spin with me and show them. Each one agreed "yeah, there does seem to be something going on," but still wouldn't do anything. So, instead of getting into a fist-fight and possibly arrested, I just left, and bought the TWM Stage two WITH bushings, and changed my tranny fluid and gear oil to Red Line fluids. It is much, much better.

I've been to a couple, but the one in Wellesly is good. The young dude at the service desk is a nice guy and quite knowledgeable. I forget his name.

Thanks djdanny. I never got a clunk though, I just couldn't shift quickly... as in at the speed I could in my old Z turbo, my buddies Audi S4, or just about any other stick that I've come across. I think there is a problem with the design. At any rate, the Stage II sts with bushings AND the synthetic fluids helped a ton. I can't say which helped more as both were done at the same time.
The clunk is probably the engine shifting, and can be alleviated with the rear bone engine mount. That is next on my list along with the rear diff mount.

As for the other guy above that likes shifting like grandma, that's your business.. but I picked up a MS6, not a 6i for a reason.

I don't shift like grandma but I don't slam the shifter into gear either
doing either is just terrible on MY car

lol, shifting shifting like grandma may not be terrible for your car... it depends how grandma shifts. And I never said I was trying to "slam" my shifts. If anything, fast shifts will be easier on your clutch, depending on the speed & rev matching (smash)

i have the same 2nd gear problem on my 07 MS6.. so to fix it you guys think i should just do the engine mounts, the tmw stage 2 with bushings, and change the tranny fluid and gear oil to redline fluids?? will this really help?? and about how much would all this cost??

Well, in all actuality, I don't think the shifter/bushings make any difference in the transmission moving from one gear to the next. It will make a difference in how it feels to you though. The shifter itself is mounted to the floor pan and actuates the shift shafts via cables. You can have someone sit in the car and slowly move the shifter through the gates to see how it is rotating one shaft and lifting/lowering the other. The 1-2 shift is a straight pull/shaft rotation and there's nothing in or on the shifter to affect it.

The first problem is the rear (dog-bone) engine mount that allows the engine to rotate and cause a slight movement of the "up-down" shift shaft which moves the straight 1-2 pull off center as the shifter passes through the neutral gate. It can hang up and block the motion until you take a bit of torque load off the engine, or slow the lever motion enough to allow it to slip past into second. A stiffer rear mount(SU, CPE, AWR, etc) will help the situation tremendously, but not completely eliminate the slow 1-2 shift.

The next real issue is inside the trans because we have "triple-cone" synchronizers to help the gears (2-4) mesh smoothly/completely. The down-side for "spirited" use is they create a bit of extra friction as they mate against the gear cone to bring it up to speed for the mesh. There is nothing "wrong" with the trans.

Anyway, a fluid change to a 75w90 (M1 is fine) synthetic along with frequent changes per the owners manual is the effective method of allowing quicker 1-2 shift.

If you have syn fluids, upgraded rear mount, and need to get the trans into 2nd gear as quickly as possible for timed acceleration runs or drag racing, then don't be shy about "putting" it into 2nd. If you are serious about getting it into 2nd right NOW, it WILL go in without any fuss. Otherwise, just let it slide in as it wants to with a steady pull on the shifter. YMMV....
