I wouldn't worry about that as much as them piled on top of each other. Unless they secure them down somehow VERY strongly, a 80* pitch is pretty much on it's side completely.

My office is starting the investigation once the vessell is brought into US waters. If it makes it to our waters. I am wondering if they will still be able to get the vehicles off the vessell and still be able to sell them? I would think so but who knows.

Mazda Vehicles Aboard Stricken Car-Carrying Vessel, Cougar Ace

"TOKYO - July 27, 2006: On July 24, 2006, Mazda was advised that the Mitsui OSK Lines' Cougar Ace had run into trouble off the Alaskan coast. Although it is reportedly still afloat, the vessel is on its side,

What caused this incident or the extent of the damage to the vehicles is currently unknown. Just over 4,700 Canadian- and U.S-bound Mazdas were on board. Approximately 60 percent of the cars are MAZDA3s and close to 30 percent are Mazda CX-7s. The vehicles were headed to the ports of Vancouver (Canada), Tacoma and Hueneme in the USA.

A plan for salvaging the vessel is being developed and will be executed by Mitsui OSK Lines as soon as possible.

Mazda will wait until the situation has been fully evaluated and understood, before disclosing further information."

That's like $35-45,000,000+ worth of Mazda3s
Plus around $60,000,000 in CX-7s.

$100,000,000+ Total.

Damn that sucks (especially for the shipping company), but I'm sure they have good insurance.

Im thinking the insurance would be on the Boating company, I dont think Mazda's insurance would be responsible...

Rick, I'm pretty sure I read $117M total somewhere, so you're pretty close. Just the magnitude of 4,000 some cars gone to waste in one shot is crazy. I personally don't see how they're going to save any of them and actually sell them. I'm hoping this doesn't have any effect on my 5 scheduled for build next week. The 5 is built at the U2 plant along with the 3 and CX-7! Then again, I'm glad my 5 wasn't on the boat :D

Yeah, I was estimating using average US Invoice prices, I'm sure using the MSRP prices it's a few million more.

You are pretty lucky they slated the Vs for production after the 3s & CXs

i know someone said earlier but anybody know if this was a ship that used shipping containers (although it doesnt look like it) or if the cars are just driven into the ship for loading. Because if they are just driven in I dont think they are tethered down....if not then there are about 4,000 cars all piled up onto the side of that ship...

The equipment and time it would take to properly teather down 4000+ cars would be outrageous. I say they were probably just driven on. But hey, if it helps I bet they at least applied the parking brake (lol2)
