can End-Link clunk cause shock failure?

Hey Guys!

I had my driver's side rear end link on my 2008.5 replaced under warranty because it was f'd up like so many others here.

I put a set of pirelli snows on my car with 17" wheels that I got from a guy that ran the set on his rx-8, and on that driver's rear side I have a huge gash in the top of sidewall/bottom of tread.

The gash is circular and about a foot long. Kinda like using a steak knife to make a start cut to peel an orange.

I had someone look at it and he said I had to have rubbed the fender to cause a gash like that.

My theory is that perhaps the suspension is now f'd up back there and I rubbed at some point.

With my fiancee driving, of course. I never heard or saw a problem.

Otherwise stock, never haul anything except my 90 pound shepherd in the back seat.

Are you talking about the swaybar endlink??

There's no way I can think of for an endlink problem on the rear to result in tire damage like you're describing...do you have some pictures you could post??

I suppose what I was trying to say was that I did have the swaybar clunk.

Could that have somehow f'd up the suspension enough to have a 17" wheel/tire rub enough to cut a big gash into the tire?

No. The swaybar doesn't "locate" any suspension parts other than itself...in other words, you could drive around without one and the car would be fine (though you'd have a bit more body roll...).

Even if it was loose on one side and connected on the other, the worst it could do is bang on the lower control arm and marr the paint...it certainly wouldn't be causing links to bend/break or suspension geometry to be altered.

Yeah, the swaybars aren't load bearing and don't keep the car off the ground. The springs & shocks do that. Most likely you or someone who drove your car managed to clip a curb, hit something or ran over some debris to cause that kind of damage.
