I have a cam shaft from Mazdaspeed. Can I install the cam shaft in a Protege5? What is the ration on the Mazdaspeed cam shaft? (boom07)

From a mazdaspeed protege? Yes you can install it in a P5. It's the EXACT same camshaft that is already in your P5.

You want to get the JDM intake cam. Go to protege5online and check them out.

how easy is the install? Im about to buy a header and intake mani, might as well get the FS-ZE intake cam with it...

go to corksport they say

"The J-Spec intake camshaft is the OEM piece from Mazda in the 170hp FS-ZE engine. The camshaft has added 10-12 whp on stock FS engines."

Search, people have installed it. It's a ton of work, even for experienced people I here.

I wouldn't call myself at all experienced and I did it myself :P

It was quite a b**** though... quite an expensive (read: air tools) b****.

is it actually a noticeable difference in power? is the power better at low or high rpm.....i would think better at high rpm. also, did you notice a big change in mileage in either direction?

I just got through installing the JDM intake cam on my sedan. It did not require any air tools, only simple hand tools. Probably took me a total of 2 hours, I was helping my brother do something at the same time so it wasn't linear. I will say that if you are not used to working on your car then this isn't the sort of job you want to start with. You do have to make sure your camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned, not a huge thing but something to watch. Otherwise it is just removing bolts and wires. Reading the factory manual helps as it goes into great detail on what you have to do.

Not sure about any change in mileage yet. As far as power goes, seat of the pants is a little softer off the bottom and a little stronger on top. The engine seems to pull better right to redline, where it was slightly wheezy before. Can't say for sure since I didn't do a dyno run, but I doubt I got 10 horses. It is nicer to rev it out though, especially in conjunction with the other mods I have done recently.

Did you do the install without taking off the crank pulley?

NJP5Guy -- at the time of the install I definitely noticed a different, the car loves high RPMs! Nowadays it's all the same though, all my mods have blurred together. I'd need to drive a stock protege to feel it.

Only have to take off the camshaft pulley on the cam you are changing. I Zip-tied the belt to both intake and exhaust cam pulleys to keep it from moving (and marked it as well), but when I put it all back together the marks were slightly off. Just had to finagle things a bit. That was the only real problem I had.

Wow in hindsight that is a GREAT idea. I made marks but of course they wore off too easily but retiming the engine wasn't bad. Eventually I want to get a new exhaust cam in and then take it to a qualified and trustworthy mechanic to get it tuned to make sure everything is optimal (valve lash, etc).
