Buying a Mazda5 with 86k?

$4.41 seems reasonable. Just add cooler now and drain/fill a gallon youtrself every year or two.

I need to remove the splash shield - makes it painful! Any tips here?

You can not buy it for $4.41 - perhaps Valvoline is a good alternative, given it is Ford .....

Dunno, I use Castrol Import.
Splash shield takes 2 minutes, maybe 1 to remove. For me, doing it every two years is not much hassle.
I just use power scredrivers to remove the few bolts.

Valvoline is poo, so consequently ford is poo too. The best quality transmission fluid is Redline.

Pentosonin makes the best quality fluids for the price point, as far as Im concerned. Thats what you folks should be looking into as price and quality is clearly not the concern here despite transmission fluid being a very important thing.

Pentosonin - You mean the one below - is it Type M5? $70

Amz feedback suggests it is being used for European cars?

Redline D4 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) $48
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Redline-D4-Automatic-Transmission-Fluid-ATF-1-Gallon/197382314
This is well known among Mechanics, hence for older cars - but things have changed and these are newer cars - Redline works for many cars including manual - being universally compatible concerns me about using it on a 5yr or newer car?

OE Equivalent are BECK/ARNLEY and Aisin - don't see 1 gallon - quart is about $7 (so $28 for a gallon)

Whereas Mazda is $32-$40/gallon Why not use Mazda ATF?

Update:
People used Amsoil and others reported bad smell - might suggest incompatibility too. It looks to me OE equivalent is cheap - almost the price of Valvoline. What I don't understand is why Mazda ATF is more expensive than Acura/Honda!!!

Valvoline might be average or below average. It used to be Honda OE equivalent some 25 yrs ago.

But Ford oil filters, Motorcraft, are one of the good ones - better than Wix - might have been made by Wix

According to post #4 in this thread, the pentosonin fluid you found is good.

That redline oil you found is also very good - highly recommended.

You can also take a look into Motul, eunos etc. AMSoil is also a good brand. I don’t know why Mazda OEM fluid is more expensive, but me along with others on here don’t recommend using it over some of the higher quality aftermarket options.

@GJ-Molestor - Thanks for bringing this up - Great.

Who sells genuine Redline for cheap - I am reluctant to buy it on Amazon.

The link for Motul is not working though (Article number 103221) - correct link:

So what issues people have with Mazda OEM ATF?

There dont seem to be any issues with mazdas fluid, but it is simply not the best quality fluid you can be using, or anywhere near it.

Dropping the pan is a little risky because you need to carefully reseal it with a gasket after to prevent leaks, but you will drain out more of the old fluid this way and this will give you an opportunity to change your transmission fluid filter which I believe is very important when servicing your transmission. If youre going to do it, do it right the first time is what I strongly recommend.

I did just notice that the link I specified is for the older Mazda CX-9. On which Mazda exactly will you be servicing the transmission? Transmissions are generally not too picky about the fluid they use, and from my time working at a transmission shop I have seen these guys put all types of fluids into vehicles you would not believe... Im not saying you can use any fluid, but it just goes to show that I think it is best to look for the highest quality fluid rather than something cheap just because you know specifically its your car.

Also, the skyactiv transmission is not a drastically different transmission from what Mazda used to make. Other than the modified clutch packs which lock up the torque converter much more often than before to give you a more direct feel, the rest of the unit is essentially the same except for the vastly improved transmission tuning, gear ratio adjustments, etc which all in total made for a vastly improved transmission. So dont worry... just use a good quality fluid and enjoy the ride. If you have any other questions feel free to inquire. Happy Sunday all

86k is fine. My 2009 has 145k, and the only engine issues I've had are needing to replace the MAF sensor (typically a 100k item), and changing one coil pack (also typically a 100k item). You might have to worry about the air conditioning and suspension, but most of those issues should be solved at 2013.
So which brand do u guys use for MAF and Coil pack?
Is dealer part better than what you would find on RockAuto (RA)?

Note: MAF sensor for my Acura is made by Denso but NGK is the popular product on RockAuto - I am puzzled.

I know the two alternatives from Valvoline (semi syn?) and Castrol (regular).
Are there any study compare these fluids and recommend one? I watch Scotty Kilmer's channel - I don't know if he recommends OEM tranny fluid?

There is also Amsoil - I am sure they have tranny fluid - the brand is superior so I assume Tranny fluid is also superior.
About the same price as Valvo - shipping?

Twice as expensive:

Amsoil is the best. I am not at all connected with Amsoil but did spent a lot of time reviewing and speaking to experts. I would use their engine oil if I am driving a lot of miles.

@Vasy, you are like veteran here whereas I am a novice. The process of adding the cooler is fun for you but worried if I might create new problems if I tried to do it!

My question is what is the key benefit out of cooler - does it keep the temp down or it filters the oil? If its temp issue, I guess use of Amsoil can help.

I need to learn to remove the shield and go under the car! Then I can easily drain and fill - I have been doing on my Acura every 2 yrs (no need to raise/go under the Acura) - easier than oil change. Only use Honda ATF.

I cannot say about the second gen. I bought the first gen 2010 model auto when it had 97k miles on it. After I did the drain and refill the shift was super smooth, very different from before so definitely recommend doing it.

I now drive a 2015 sport auto with 75k and I have the Idemitsu 10113-042P fluid ready to go.
