Broken keyfob & PRNDL light

Okay guys, this one's a two-fer. I need some suggestions advice on the following:

1. My power lock keyfob broke this morning on the way to the dealership. The fob itself works fine but the plastic loop that a keychain ring would run through broke. The dealership charges $75 bucks for a replacement fob and I don't want to get a new one when my current one still works but the piece is just gone! I was considering drilling two small holes in the fob and using thing metal wire as a new loop. Any other suggestions before I lose this thing?

2. The bulb that illuminates what gear you're in an an auto P5 died before a trip I took for Christmas. I was traveling the next day so I went to the local shop and they took out the old bulb and put in a new one for me for $5. The mechanic apologized for not having a red bulb but I was fine with it as having the color not match the rest of the guages was less important than not knowing what gear I was in at night. I figured I'd just get a red bulb when I got home.

Long story short: THERE IS NO RED BULB!!!! Apparently, there is a piece that goes over the bulb to give it a red tint but thats long gone since it was probably thrown away with the old bulb. Not that this is a major issue but it's kind of annoying because you can't just buy that piece but you must buy the whole assembly to get it. Someone suggested taking the bulb out and coloring it with a red sharpie so it would get the proper tint. This sounds silly but it might work. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

You should be able to get a new fob on ebay for not a lot (certainly less than $75)...just make sure the numbers on the back of your fob match up. As far as the bulb, you could try asking Jason at onlinemazdaparts.com if he can get you another "condom" for the bulb. What size is it? If it's the 194 (larger size) you can buy red ones at Autozone, but I have not seen 74s in red (the sharpie might work). You could always replace them with LED bulbs (I hear they're good, I've just never used them). Check ebay for those too. Hope this helps!

As far as the keyfob, you can for sure get one on ebay. I just bought one last week for 12 dollars.. received it yesterday, and had it programmed in less than a minute. just make sure you do a search for protege5, or mazda... and make sure it works with the P5.

check the thread I started for instructions how to program it... it's very easy..

I actually ghetto rigged mine. Drilled two tiny holes and used some RC car antenna wire. I'm still needing the rubber bit that fits over the LED is.

Can you post the link to your key fob thread?

Here are the instructions, as posted by another user.
Start:
1999-2003 Protege OEM Keyless Entry Code Change How-to
The following is a how-to on changing the security codes on the remote and keyless entry module in case you are either paranoid or having problems with your keyless entry.

2. Open driver's side door
3. Insert key into ignition switch and cycle the key between the ON and LOCK positions 3 times
4. Remove key from ignition switch
5. Push the driver's side door sensor switch 3 times
6. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock.
If nothing happens, wait 40 seconds and start from step 3 again
7. Press any button on any transmitter twice
8. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
9. If you have only 1 remote, press any button on that remote twice.
If you have 2 or 3 remotes, press any button on any of the other remotes twice.
10. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
11. If you have 1 or 2 remotes, press any button on either remote twice.
If you have 3 remotes, press any button on the 3rd remote twice.
12. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
13. The codes should now be reprogrammed

Note A:
1. Hold down the driver's side door sensor switch
2. Verify that the doors lock and unlock twice
3. Start from step 3 again

If you start working on 1 remote, finish working with that 1 remote until you're done reprogramming it!!!
