Brake Time? I Think So...

Hey, all. I've been getting a squeak-squeak-squeak, high-pitched and not only when braking, from my front end for a week or so now. Been told it's probably brake pads at the wear indicators, so I took the wheels off and looked at the pads. I think they're probably shot. Here are the pics:

If they are in fact shot, I need to find a cheap way to keep going until we have some more $$ for better brakes. We've been hit with almost $1000 in vet and medical bills lately, and it looks like more are coming.

So what are my options? I've read that these rotors cannot be machined...is that true? If so, this gets really hard for me.

How terrible are Autozone's Duralast Gold pads for the MS6? They're cheaply priced, and I think with some help I could install them myself...

If not, I'll probably pick up some EBC green stuff pads and still try a self install....

Ugh.

OK, I'm thinking about going with the cheap ($40) Duralast pads and leaving the rotors for now, just to get me through a few months until I can afford pads and rotors all around....thoughts?

Actually......I had it inspected at Just Brakes, and they said I still have 20% of my pads left on the front and a little more on the back. At my rate of driving, I should get another 5000 - 10000 miles out of them, so another 6 months to a year!

And, oddly, they use one of the aftermarket pads that I was considering buying (from Jeff at TriPoint), the Posi QUiet semi-metallics or ceramics.

Either way, I don't need brakes right now, and can STOP driving the Jeep!

$40 pads?? i haven't been able to find a set for that cheap

And you won't. I went to my local Autozone and they don't carry them and cannot get them.

Advanced Auto has some they can get, but I'll probably do the Posi-Quiets at Just Brakes when it's time.

Insides are a bit more worn, but I was also looking at them wrong when I inspected them myself. Now I know what I'm looking for/at. :)

Be careful with Just Brakes...they tried to screw me over when I first got my car. Be suspicious when if they tell you that you need new stuff...

Yeah, I was encouraged that they actually told me I DIDN'T need brakes, but I also watched them charge the guy ahead of me $563 for almost completely rebuilt brakes on his Jeep. THen they brought out the old parts and I understood...they were shot. Parts that were broken, bent, rusted...it wasn't pretty.

And more and more, I'm leaning toward doing the brakes myself when the time comes. Excuse for a Colorado Mazda Club install day at my house. :)

dont wait too long doing pads, my daughters 06 m6i just got a set at 30k on odo.. all city driving. another couple weeks and i would have had to do rotors also, but shop cut them and it s performing as good as new.... forgot name of pads uses , will get back with that info

Those pads have plenty of wear left. However, the squealer (small metal bar that rubs the rotor when the pad is worn) is typically only on one pad, probably the inside one.

If your inside pad is at the wear indicator, you have a bigger problem. Sliding calipers that don't slide (because they need lube) will wear 1 pad more than the other. Just check it out.

I'm not a 6 owner, but I know that new cars take a while to get parts to the cheap stores. You may need to get pads from the dealer, but you also may be able to get pads for a ford fusion cheap. I thought that the 6 and the fusion were nearly identical.

Good luck

Bendix CT-3 will own all. Get em (at least for the 06+) at rock auto. I loved mine on my old 300m and if they can stop that car great, they would be a nice upgrade for the 6.
