brake problem....

well the 2 bolts holding on the brake system in the rear left have fallen out while i was driving. the brakes starting grinding on the inside of my wheel sounding like my exhaust had fallen. on the inside brake pad...theres a small cylinder head that compresses when the brake is pressed. i cannot get the head to retract enuf to be able to slip the brakes back over the rotar. i notice there is brake fluid leaking now from this cylinder. do i need to now bleed the brakes to release any pressure so i can get the brakes over the rotar?

no u dont have to bleed the breaks take a board stick it on 1 side were your break pad is and use a c clamp just like doing your breaks. its called a calibur u may need to replce it.

How did the bolts fallout in the first place If you are talking about rear caliper then on the backside of the caliper there is a 12mm bolt thet covers a hole inside there is a allen screw that you can turn to move the pads . turn it counter clockwise to loosen the pads . this will allow you to remove the caliper .

I had removed the bottom bolt cuz it was stripped at the bottom and would not tighten. I took the bolt to work with me to try and find a match but couldnt find one. That was like a month ago and had since kinda forgotten about it. I guess maybe the stress put on the 1 bolt left broke it off thus the brakes fallin off the rotor. anyone know if these bolts are tempered or a place to find them?

heres some pics....3rd pic shows that little head i was talking about. theres little room to get the inner pad back in. once in, theres no gap to place back over the rotor. what piece is the 2nd pic?

You've popped the piston out of the caliper. This can happen when brake pressure is applied and there is no rotor or pad to prevent the piston from travelling too far. You've either got to go purchase a caliper rebuilding kit and get new dust seals, or get a new caliper. Make sure you've got compressed air if you're planning on rebuilding, as it's about the only way to puff out the seal as you press the piston back in.

And the bolts are grade 8 10x1.25 mm pitch. Best place to get them is from the stealership. Grainger or Fastenal or the like don't have that pitch, and their selection of metric bolts is pretty thin.

Tow it to a shop and have them put you right. I don't normally say that, but it might actually save you money in the long run. Driving around for a month with a loose rear caliper might have ended a lot worse.

i got the caliper back on. ebrake works as should. brake pedal does feel a lil soft but i do stop better now that its back on the rotor. anyone know how much a new caliper is from the dealer?

they sell quality calipers? how bout pep boys?

It's a solid chunk of iron. Any quality comes in how much casting flash they grind off before they put it in the box, and the tolerance of manufacture. If it fits, you're usually good.

If a brand new caliper from autozone scares you, you could go to a junkyard and shell out 80 bucks for a used one, but it would be of questionable history and condition...

Dealerships want 280 for a rear caliper last I recall. (I had a slide pin freeze up on me and was weighing pounding it out vs. replacing the whole thing.)
