brake light

I had that happen for the first time last night. It was very cold out. Maybe the sensor sticks.

Edit: Actually, it didn't pop on while driving. It never went off when I took the brake off.

I agree with pdh, and if the fluid's low, chances are it's time for pads. How many miles ya got?

I checked the fluid it dosen't look too low. i also have aboot 30000 miles. i had it in to mazda to check it out because this isn't the first time that it has happened. they replaced the abs sensor in the back passenger side and called it good.. i have a appt. at mazda on monday...

I had this happen in my Protege5 awhile back.

The rear pads needed to be replaced. As your rear pads wear, the rear caliper pistons move to keep the pad close to the rotor. The light comes on as a result of the fluid level being too low for the rear brakes. The fluid isn't really low, though, it's just in a larger reservoir because the caliper pistons have moved relative to their new pad position.

Short story? I replaced the pads, which required moving the caliper piston back into the original position, which moved the fluid higher in the reservoir, which removed the brake light for the hand brake.

You could also have a bad sensor for the master cylinder. The light will also come on that way. A quick test would be to disconnect it and see if the light goes out. Check your pad thickness front and rear first though.
