Brake light problem

:
2016 CX-5 Touring Skyactiv 2.5L NA, ~108K Miles
I have a 2016 CX-5 Touring 2.5L, no custom mods or changes.

The brake light on the driver's side does not work, but the running light (or whatever it's called) does work. The high stop and passenger side work as they should, as do all the other lights.

Naturally, I figured I'd replace the bulb and be good to go, but that did not fix it. I also tried swapping the right and left bulbs in the off chance that the ones I just bought were bad, but still no luck. Fuse is fine, though the right side is on the same circuit, so I wouldn't have expected the fuse to be bad anyway. At this point, I'm figuring either the socket is bad, or the wiring is messed up somehow -- though the socket looks totally fine to me.

Does anyone have any ideas of where I can start looking? Is there maybe a connector somewhere where several "branches" meet and maybe became loose or corroded or something, and if so, any general idea where it's located so I don't have to tear apart the trim trying to find it?

Thank you very much, I appreciate any help!

Removing the hatch inside panel isn't too hard. You might have to use a probe to trace where the problem is. The wiring bundle for the hatch comes down from above the roofliner through a rubber grommet.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to get myself a probe. From what I can tell the wiring comes down the driver's side and branches off from there to the high stop and passenger side tail lights. Does that sound right?

I've been able to avoid investigating that part and have never removed the headliner.
It seems to me the wires that come through the hatch rubber duct would have them combined and then the left and right would split there under the plastic liner of the rear hatch.

Thanks. Going to play around more on the weekend and will let you know what happens.

I’ve encountered a similar situation with a brake light not working, but in my case, it turned out to be a loose connection in the wiring. You might want to check the connectors near the light assembly for any signs of corrosion or looseness, as sometimes even a slightly loose connection can cause issues like this.
