Boost on Auto (I know it's been discussed)

about the shifting.. what about if you have a straight auto.. not the sport shift..

its a possibility but its way too hard to tell when the tranny is going to shift. i wouldn't reccomend it. i'm still kind of unsure how long my tranny is going to last on 8 psi. its basically been the same for over a year. I did however notice longer shifts between gears 2 and 3 and then i started to beat on 1st gear with 8psi a little more and now the shift between 1 and 2 is a little longer too. however this hasn't changed in a year. you can't be boost happy with an auto. just a few good runs and then time to just hit 4 or 5 psi to let the tranny cool off

What are the options we have to beef up the auto tranny ?
Lentech, Level 10, others ?

noone has ever done this with the protege. Lentech will do it but it costs a buttload (atleast $3k), and you have to send them your tranny. getting all the parts for a manual swap and labor is usually cheaper of about the same price as the lentech upgrade. hell i already sourced an MP3 as a donor car for under $500. not thru a junkyard though.

Although a Lentech upgrade with a transbrake on a Turbo P5... sleeper drag monster

yah.. it'd def be nice. lolz... too dam bad i'd have to sell body parts to afford it.

i can't decide which i wanna do yet... but it would be nice to be able to up the boost and not worry about seeing my tranny on the road behind me. heh

bigwoofer's done some stuff to his.. and is working on being able to mod the shift points or something like that.. but other wise......sport shift.

i have mine beefed up as well ... torque conv. , shift kit, upgraded valve body, all new gears, and shift points messed with as well. the whole tranny has been basically rebuilt. my problem now is the motor detonating. need to get it retuned. an auto should be fine for a while running it no more than 7psi just like Juan said.

I have someone here that can do a tranny beef up that will hold about 300whp on auto, and abouot 500-600whp on the manual transmission.

You guys with the auto turbos, what cars have you ran against. Yeah yeah you shouldn't street race, but what kind of cars have you "surprised" with? 160-180whp can I keep up with a Mazda3 (stock/minor mods) or '03 Civic Si (stock/minor mods) ?

Pulled on V6 Mustangs, GT from a 40 roll to 70~80 (bad driver i think), VW Passat 60 roll. even with an IS300 when i first got the kit, (i think there is some tranny slip now) the weird Mercedes Hatch C230 Kompressor i think.

Hey miaprotege and igdrasil, who upgraded your auto transmissions? What other places are out there besides lentech? How much it cost you guys to upgrade yours?

GTI, dead even with the new TLs (60-110), boosted rsx, TC, F-150 harley, and lost to a cobalt SS when i was boosting 9 with the tranny slipping

Hey $2000 isn't that bad. I looked on the levelten site and I can't find anything for protege. Where does it say they do transmission work on the protege?

no worries.

i believe bigwoofer is turbo/auto and is a '02 p5 :)

i think he's also upgraded his tranny though....

I run the straight auto, no sport-tronic (missed that boat by a year).

I've been boosted for a year in november, run daily 8-9psi have been as high as 16psi (but that was a little ooops). Haven't had any problems with the tranny yet, but I do have a few grand into it so far. I am pretty careful to not floor it at certain speeds as the tranny will downshift and the rpm's go crazy.

I have hammered it off the line and surprised many an import though. Have to sort out my boost controller issues first, I am having a problem with the car spooling up way to quick. I am at 9psi by 3500rpm if I turn the overboost warning mode off on my EBC. Great for in town driving, horrible on the highway as my boost controller will open the wastegate to bleed off boost and the car sounds like its lurching as the boost goes up and down.

I dyno'd the car a couple days ago, and the boost curve looks horrible, it's like an osilloscope, and my power curve isn't smooth at all cause the EBC keeps pulling boost and I am spooling too quick. Should have it fixed in the next week or so. So unfortunately I am limited to 170.1whp at 6psi but I did hit 174wtq at 3600rpm also at 6psi.

We couldn't do any high boost runs, as we need to sort out the boost controller issues first (appears the shop that installed my blizt EBC tapped on of the vacuum lines into the wrong source). So hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can do a couple of 10psi pulls and see how badly I am beating on the tranny
