BMW M Coupe 2001 ... a good investment?

Hot car... and since you're trying to move away from modding the R&M on that car will help keep mod money low. :-) Seriously, take a hard look at it and get it looked at. If it seems that there a lot of little things wrong with it, stay away because the smallest pieces on BMWs cost the most.

My thought on what you should go with is:
1)M coupe
2)350Z
3)RX-8
But instead of the RX-8, if you are going the rotary route, wait a couple years and get the new RX-7. Supposed to be somewhere near 300hp or more

Rotaries are fun....if you like losing a quart of oil every other tank of gas to bang out high 14's...

I'd say M3, then RX-8, then 350Z (out of the cars you have listed).

I've wanted an M3 since I was 16. They are still considered one of the best production track cars under $50k. All I have to say is that the M3 3.2L has been on the Ward's Top Ten Engines list 9 out of 10 years for good reason. 6 individual throttle bodies (one for each cylindar); need I say more? I'd be driving one right now if I wasn't scared to death of the maintainence costs.

Good luck!

Bryan, just curious and not really my business, but I thought you were trying to save money for law school. M3's aren't exactly cheap, especially one only a few years old.

the M coupe is fast and sleek......my opinion would be to go for it. I've had the luck of autocrossing a few of them and they handle incredibly well. A stock 3 series is no comparison to an M coupe, I've raced both. As far as upgrading one goes, there is alot of stuff that can be done to them, but I would start with an intake and chip, that will get you to about 350hp at the crank, not too shabby in a little car. As far as maintenance goes, I know everyone says that they are horrible, but my ex had a 1995 325 and it was never in the shop, and a friend of mine has a 95 M3 that is only in the shop on occasion because he's a dumbass, granted these are older than the one you're talking about, but I would think an older car would break more than a new car when pushed hard, and they just don't break that often. One thing to look for on the M coupe is if the endtanks on the radiator are plastic or aluminum, if they are plastic I would recommend replacing it with a performance radiator as when pushed hard the plastic ones break on a regular basis.

i have found the m coupes for about 25-26K with about 30-50K miles on them. I can pretty mch afford that AT MOST and i really want to get my money's worth this time.

only problem is that there arent many for sale around here in michigan.

What do you guys think about the 1999-2000 ones? they only have 240 hp but are cheaper than the 01's.

well bmw will actually WARRANTY their s*** unlike ummm...mazda!, just don't mod it and get a warranty with it and you are GTG, i had to get some warranty work(needed new crank angle sensor) done on the benz and guess what it cost me...not a damn thing and i got a free car wash bitches!

the 1999-2000 have essentially the same motor, just with one throttle body instead of 6 individual throttle bodies I think, I could be wrong on that. I know the new M3's have 6 throttle bodies. The 99-00 motors hold up extremely well, it's the same motor that was in the M3 from 96-2000, there are numerous upgrades for the motor and with a few key upgrades, exhaust, intake, and chip they will run mid to low 13's, which isn't too shabby. I also think there are a few turbo kits floating around for them, they are pricey, but damn the car is wicked with FI

There was no 2000 M3...the last year for the E36 was '99 & the first year for the E46 was '01. To my knowledge, the only BMWs with ITBs are the old/new M5 & the current M3. Furthermore, the engine might have been the same in the M Coupe for '00 & '01, but the #s changed (240/236 --> 315/251)...that's a really big jump in hp.

350z is nice but it isn't 50:50 weight balance ratio. the m coupe is nice but it's still a z3 chassis. Get the m3, it's better and more usable.

I love E36's....I'd be willing to pay for the upkeep on one. Can be found used for like 15k

I was in a hurry and wasn't thinking about that, I couldn't remember if it was 99 or 00 that was the last year of the old M3. It's the same block the hp difference comes from a redesigned head and the addition of the stepless Double VANOS as opposed to the VANOS 2 variable valve timing. I hate it when I get in a hurry and don't pay attention to what I'm typing.

my father has owned two m3's one he got in 94 and then one he got in 98 and we still have the 98 its a convertible blue exterior and grey inteior...ive driven the m3 and its a blast....the m coupe i beleive is the z3 with a m3 motor in it well thats what my dad has told me in the past...m3's are comfy because they can holld 4 people easily, the back is a little tight but not too bad...im 5'5 and weigh like 175 lbs and ride in the back every now and then and it isnt too bad...i wish i could have an m3 even though maintenence is high and insurance for my age and it being a convertible will make it even worse... but i love the m3 its an awesome car with lots of potential ive never really pushed the car though but pick up is nice....this is my two cents though and i am biased towards bmw's as well id prefer a bmw over a mercedes any day...

about the potential part there, i disagree, it takes ALOT of work(and money also) to make them faster then they already are since they are pretty much maxed from factory...

I work for BMW, if you want send me the VIN for the m coupe, ill tell ya all about it. As far as repair on it, i can tell ya if its in the cpo program, certified pre owned or if you can get it in there, and thats the good year for them, they have the m motor out of the m3, thats a bad ass car, i haven driven a few.

lemme know
